International News Germany Unblocks Part of Global Fund DonationJuly 12, 2011 Germany has announced it will unblock about half the contributions it has withheld since January from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. Germany had pledged about €200 million (US $290 million) to the fund for 2011, but in January it halted its donations amid a donor backlash. It has now decided to release €100 million (US $145 million), said Sebastian Lesch, Development Aid Ministry spokesperson. However, to ensure the money is used in a "corruption-free" way, Lesch said Germany is requiring that the money be allocated to countries where international organizations, such as the UN Development Program, are tasked with delivering the aid.
