UN Security Council Unanimously Adopts Resolution on Peacekeeping and AIDS

June 8, 2011

The UN Security Council "has unanimously adopted a resolution underlining the need for continued international action to halt the impact of HIV and AIDS in conflict and post-conflict situations," VOA News reports. The council's discussion "focused on how UN peacekeeping missions can be important players in an integrated response to combating and preventing the spread of AIDS" (Basheer, 6/7).

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe addressed the meeting, which was convened by Gabon President Ali Bongo Ondimba, according to the UN News Centre (6/7).
