Desafortunadamente en la mayoría de las ocasiones el toxo no se erradica, se puede controlar. Es por esto que se continua luego de la terapia aguda inicial de 4 - 6 semanas, se pasa a una fase de mantenimiento preventivo de por vida. No obstante quisiera señalarle que los estudios y guias de tratamiento recientes demuestran demuestran que si su enfermedad esta controlada (carga viral indetectable y CD4 estable por 6 meses o mas) se puede considerar descontinuar este tratamiento preventivo en forma segura.
