Potential area to research/ activist help
      03/24/01 02:38 AM

This note is posted in the hopes of finding an activist who would consider fasting in order to draw attention to information which could influence the healthcare of HIV infected and change the shape of the global crises.

It is extremely vital information which remains bypassed by AIDS organizations and others in surrounding healthcare for complex reasons, mainly because no one has displayed the leadership to take time to understand the issue or place its value to the HIV infected in its proper context.

Briefly the main concept that this claim is centered on is the knowledge that the ability to control the immune system will result in exceptional advances in devising practical applications in medicine. A parallel would be cold fusion in that it captures the imagination with the resulting practical applications if the theory of how to do this could be worked out.

Scientists are pretty unsure of whether cold fusion will be possible or whether there will be a way to make this into practical applications. As unsure as they are of this, they are absolutely sure that once it is discovered how the immune system regulate its actions that there will be a great number of practical applications in medicine. The frame of mind for this in the scientific community is not if, but when, in contrast to cold fusion. This was a hot area of research for the large drug companies in the 80's and I can supply direct quotes from people researching immune regulation like Dr Anthony Fauci that put the potential of this discovery in this same perspective. The reality is that this research should receive top priority and focus by those responsible for pushing the envelope of HIV research.

Unfortunately for people not immersed in immunology, few people recognize this subject, but it is amazing, even so, that the general public does not know the power of this discovery considering its sensational nature. It is one area that activists could demand research be done and know that they are taking the most powerful step forward, but no AIDS organization has ever presented this concept in its proper context as to the power it has or so that specific action can take place. There are references to immune research and things like restoring the immune system but no intense focus of what finding this core concept in immunology would mean to HIV healthcare and it should have been a registered, obtainable goal from the very first in the HIV crises.

If the importance were truly understood by activists, there would possibly be a prize offered to the scientist by now who eventually discovers how the immune system is regulated like other important issues in science and there would be large scale grants directed at solving this problem. The research being done in this area is extremely poor quality for again complex reasons as is the focus on the subject by all involved.

A related matter is that in order for HIV infected to become drug and disease free, likely the immune system will be central in a working therapy. The concept to solve that will most likely result in practical applications so that the immune system can be manipulated to keep the viral load at undetectable levels is figuring out how it is regulated.

If interested in more information, helping or questions please e-mail me. Feel free to pass this along to someone else. It will take a grassroots effort to get this information spread.
