It sounds like what put you in the AIDS category is your CD4 count. I had my count go down to 208, just above the level, within a few months of finding out. It was before I started medication which of course brought my count back up. Because of medication it's now easy for people that have a drop in their CD4's to regain them and thus go back up over that number threshold.
However it would be a reporting nightmare to reclassify everyone back and forth, so once we hit that number we get the classification.
Best thing to do is not focus on the term. Instead focus on your viral load and cd4 counts.
