One thing I would like to add to this thread is this; (not completely related to being a professional, but still connected to different 'camps' of people who deal with HIV and how they handle it.) In this life, you get thrown curve balls from time to time, sometimes small ones, sometimes big ones. HIV I would class as one of the big ones. Tests in life like this allow us to demonstrate how we see our lives and ourselves and if seen in a certain way, it can turn into a great positive.

Part of the issue contained in this thread is that some people rise to the occasion, see it as a challenge, but one which will not deter them from their life path. Others use it as some means of an excuse, to just sit back and give up, to justify continued bad behaviour or to play the role of the victim.

Some people just will not settle for the role of the victim, and it is these people that are the ones you need to seek out Phoenix. Professional or not. It's more about character than about occupation.

But besides that, I do also understand the issue here whereby many people writing in this thread have strong feelings of letting themselves down because they feel that out of all people, they should have known better. But to those people I say that "life happens", so many variables and everyone makes mistakes, professional or not professional, you are still human after all. Don't beat yourself up about it just because you thought you were someone who should have been setting the best example (especially those of you writing who are in the medical professions) but somehow you have found yourself in a situation you never thought could ever happen.

At the very least, when I go through something that could be seen as a tragedy, when I am changed forever and no good can be seen from it, I tell myself that the Universe has put me through it simply to give me an accurate perspective. I am now ready and willing to be there for someone else at some future stage who has found themselves in a similar situation. I can relate and support in a way that no-one else ever can if they haven't been there too. Sometimes when someone is going through a massive crisis (HIV diagnosis would class as that) the only, ONLY thing which pulls them through is having another person there who they know in their heart understands. Nothing needs to be said or done, just them knowing you know is enough to pull them through.

For those of you trying to find some sort of sense in what seems like a senseless place in your life, see the strength you can offer others from just being who you are and being where you are with your HIV. Just by working, creating a great life and focussing on developing your life to it's utmost and refusing to play the victim, you are going to become the most powerful role-model for all future generations of people with HIV. They need that inspiration. They could be so swamped with fear and mourning for what was their life that they face the real risk of turning victim, going into a depression, losing any spark for life, but once they see you doing your thing, still having HIV along the way, who knows what effect you might have on someone down the track? See the good in it, it's a personal life-challenge for you to bring out your best (or worst) as you live with it and it's an inspiration for others who desperately need it when you continue-on in your professional capacities.
