A friend with AIDS and his uncontrolled anger

I have a friend who has been HIV+ for years. I work with him every day, and we usually get along beautifully. But more and more, he has these enraged fits -- temper tantrum kind of things. Out of the blue. I'm worried that the AIDS is penetrating and affecting his brain. I don't want to end our friendship over this if it's really the disease doing the ugly stuff. It's very abusive -- emotional manipulation, etc. So I'm at a loss as to how to handle this. Any suggestions?
