I, too, got my disability (SSDI) when first applied for with no questions asked. You mentioned "before the well runs dry". At some point I wish everyone would write to their local congressperson and ask them to pay back all the money previous congresses have taken from Social Security. The fund would be solvent for many more years.

Riverprincess mentioned that you can work while receiving SSDI. This is true. There are limits to how much you can earn before it affects your monthly payment. But, if you're like I imagine you won't be running out today to get that new, full time job as Chairman of Microsoft.

You're disabled. This doesn't mean you should just sit home and collect your check every month. It does mean that you probably aren't ever going to be able to function at levels you once did. There is no shame in this. When you get tired of sitting home and go out looking for work (next month, 6 months from now, in 3 years) you probably need to look in a field different than the one you worked beforehand. In another post a person wrote about being 33 and finally finding out she had grown up and was ready to reinvent herself. You should consider doing the same thing.

Also, since you know you're going to have some guaranteed income (albeit much less than when you were working) you should consider going to work for a non-profit. One or two days a week. Helping them with things that need to be done but noone seems to have the time to do. If it pays it'll be minimal. If it doesn't pay you'll still go home with the feeling that you did something productive to help someone.

Don't close doors before they have been opened. Open your eyes and see the world. It's a bright, shining place full of happiness, but also full of others who need help. You're getting your help. Don't forget to pay it forward!
