My specialist's horror story - HIV Needle stick
      02/12/02 07:02 AM

I went to see a specialist last night in Melbourne, to check up on the other health issues of mine - due to HIV anxiaty.

He is extremely known doctor, and excelletn specialist and operator, not HIV specialist though.

Anyway, I told him from the begining and my HIV fears and symptoms etc.

He than told me about his incident two years ago Needle stick injury.

He was operating a HIV patient and he got niddle stick in his finger.

I asked him how it happens?

"When I was doing stitches, I asked for needle, and put hand out (he was mimicking how it happens) and the nurse gave me a wrong niddle, and I grabbed and continue the stiching and right through the stiching straight into my other hand."

I was terrified just listening to this storry.

Now, how about that for high risk exposure.

He than was put on PEP immediately (Use of 3 drugs immediately after infection - like within 72 hours), I am sure you all know what PEP is.

And he was cleared.

It's not fair to mentione his name, but he works in top Private Hospital in Melbourne, every doctor knows of him and he is simple "maniac" to his profession how good he is.

Now, the question and the thoughts that made me thinking.

He was never prooved to be positive (obviously due to time and window period) but he was cleared he said I remember that clearly.

"After I finished medications I was cleared in six weeks, and I never thought about it ever again"!!!

What do you think?

1. Was he ever infected - could it happened that he has not been infected with this accident?

2. Was he infected and cleared with medication?

3. Why do you think he was happy to be cleared after six weeks (being doctor of such calibre), wouldn't you think he would keep testing 1 year after.

Being myself obssesed with HIV and knowledge I have required in the last 2,5 months as you all did, I was questioning him like it was KGB in Sibiria. His storry remained the same, "that has happened and I was cleared in 6 weeks and I never looked back on it since - I went on with my life and don't think of it". He is just over 60.

Very interested to hear your comments.

Please indicate in your Subject as two lines:
