The CDC's official training manual says 3 months is all that is needed for a conclusive test. Back when they lowered the window to 3 months in 2001 they had added the cavet that if a doctor felt that a patient was displaying symptoms and the doctor felt it was needed a follow up test at 6 months would be recommended.

However they seem to be very slow in updating their website to reflect their current recommendations per their training materials. Could have something to do with the current administration's stance that it's better to scare people out of sex.
