Yet more reason to be cautious about use of HAART and to work on liver health by not drinking alcohol, not smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight.
COMPLICATIONS OF HIV/HAART
Liver-Related Deaths More Common Among HIV-Infected Patients After Controlling for CD4 After controlling for CD4+ cell count, the overall rate of liver-related deaths among HIV-infected people has increased each year since the advent of HAART, according to new results from the massive EuroSIDA study. In analyzing the records of nearly 11,000 European HIV-infected patients, researchers at first found that the overall mortality rate from liver-related disease decreased 7 percent per year during the modern HAART era. However, after controlling for CD4+ cell count (which has generally increased as a result of modern treatment), the mortality rate was actually found to have increased by 13 percent per year. Long-term antiretroviral use, hepatitis C coinfection and hepatitis B coinfection were believed to be the primary causes of the increase.
