For the worried and unreasonable
      05/13/11 04:48 PM

Hopefully this post will help some of you with your self inflicted torment.

We HIVers spend a great deal of time, effort, and resources keeping abreast of the latest information concerning HIV/AIDS/STDS/OI/ and general health concerns. We have been through the process of testing, treating, and worrying about our health. We have dealt with the devastation, the turmoil, and the acceptance and done it multiple times. We tend to use the scientific method of forming ideas, testing those ideas, learning from the results, and creating new ideas through our journey. We are the front line, the ones with the knowledge and experience. That is why you come here. To tap into our collective knowledge and find answers.

The majority of the concerned are scared and just want someone to say "Hey it's OK go get tested and you can rest after." Though there are a few that even after testing insist that the only possible explanation for their problems is HIV. No one likes to hear that it could be in their heads. That they have a mental defect or that they are wrong. BUT you come here to find answers and insist, because the answer is not HIV it is wrong. The reasons differ, sometimes its guilt about the situation, sometimes its ignorance, sometimes it is a mental health problem, sometimes we feel guilty because we have put ourselves at risk and should have it and don't (also known as survivors guilt).

Whatever the reason for your disbelief, realize attacking those who have lived with, experienced, and have learned far more about the illness than most of our doctors (not to say doctors are ignorant or un-knowledgeable just that they don't have the time to learn every late breaking new study or spend hours doing research on a daily basis) is not only showing how ignorant you are it also makes most of us sickened to learn that there is still so much stigma and ignorance in the world.

If you have tested negative multiple times and still continue to believe that you are positive and take up the time and resources that could be better spent on someone who actually needs the help and the resources you are using imagine what you are doing to them. The tests may be free, but they are not unlimited, the councilors may take the time to talk to you, but that is time they could have spent with someone who is in much more need.

As well you spend your time, money, and effort to prove everyone wrong that you do have HIV instead of taking the rational and intelligent stance of exhausting all other possibilities. HIV is not the only illness out there that is sexually transmitted. In fact most common colds are transmitted through kissing, sharing utensils, being in the same room as someone who is coughing or sneezing, improper hand washing, etc.

Just because you get sick after a sexual encounter doesn't mean it is from that encounter. Germs/Virus/Fungal infections take time to incubate. You got sick the day after having sex, well guess what it takes on average a week to two weeks for almost every strain of every illness out there that is communicable to incubate and to have an immune response. (Health and biology 101). The ones that don't take long are extremely deadly on average and you would be in a hospital wishing for death rather than at home thinking you are dying.

So before you post think rationally. Get tested if the situation warrants it. Look at other possible causes if you need help here is a good list of infections that people mistake for HIV/ARS:

Lyme Disease
Flu
Common Cold
Lupus
Anthrax (not weapons grade, found commonly in soil)
Peliosis hepatis
Typhinia (Relapsing Fever)
Pneumonia
Food Poisoning (gastroenteritis)
Peptic (gastric) ulcers
Acute cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation)
Listeriosis
Tuberculosis
Meningococcal meningitis
Nocardiosis (Pulmonary nocardiosis)
Pasteurellosis
Rocky mountain spotted fever
Pharyngitis (strep throat)
Syphilis (STI)
Pseudotuberculosis
Cryptosporidiosis
Cancer
Lymphoma
MRSA
rheumatoid arthritis
Aspergillosis
Brucellosis
Campylobacteriosis
Cat scratch disease
ENCEPHALITIS (several related diseases, including West Nile, Eastern, Western, and St. Louis encephalitis)
Ehrlichiosis (two forms)
HANTAVIRUS PULMONARY SYNDROME
HISTOPLASMOSIS
Leptospirosis (Weil's disease)
Lymphocytic-choriomeningitis
Psittacosis
Q (query) fever
Schistosomiasis (Swimmer's itch)
Sporothrichosis
Tularemia
Typhus
Liver problems
Stress

Etc etc etc

Those all contain at least 2 of the symptoms commonly mistaken for Acute HIV infection. Most cover at least 3 or more of the "symptoms" supposedly defined as Acute HIV infection. The criteria I used was flu like symptoms, rash. swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, joint pain, drop in cd4 count, diarrhea, abdominal pain/cramps, weight loss, Nausea, weakness, night sweats, cough, sore throat, and runny nose. All of which is what those who repeated test negative swear is proof that they have HIV.

Please note this is a SHORT LIST. I barely scratched the surface of the common every day things that can cause symptoms similar or exactly like HIV.

I pray this helps ALL of you convinced that it's HIV to see the world as a much bigger place with a lot more out there than HIV. After you test negative, move on and explore the other possibilities. Or try to test the other possible answers while you are waiting to get tested. If nothing else you will learn something and hopefully take your mind off your obsession with HIV.

And as a HIVer believe me when I say some of those other illnesses above scare the hell out of me much more than HIV does, HIV will not kill you in a year or even 5 untreated, these other illnesses left untreated can in days or weeks. So while you are chasing ghosts for something that isn't there (especially those of you who have already tested negative conclusively) why not open your minds to other things and maybe even find an answer.

Best of luck
