Serodiscordant hetrosexuals practising unsafe sex
      #262695 - 04/26/12 12:14 PM

Hi all,

I'm new here. My boyfriend and i got together about 8 months ago. He was actually my first love, he was always the one and this has been rekindled 18 years later. He disclosed to me very soon after we resumed contact and although i was devastated, i have learnt a lot, he is on medication and HIV does not scare me anywhere near what it did intially....education is key.

I wondered how many other magnetic hetrosexual couples are practising unsafe sex? We were told by our specialist that after a couple of months on ART, we could decide whether to use condoms or not. We chose the latter and have been having LOTS of unprotected sex. I know there is still a risk but based on a doctor saying the risk is very low and then the Swiss study, i'm thinking that most people are covering their arses when they say use protection....just incase one slips through the net.

How many other serodiscordants are not using condoms out there and how long have they stayed negative? Or is there anyone out there that has adhered to medication whithout any slip ups, been undetectable and not used condoms, only for their partner to still seroconvert??

I'm just trying to work out the level of risk here as when our doctor changed, he looked shocked at what the original doctor said.

Many thanks,

A Poz partner who deeply cares for you would not even allow you to bring up that "suggestion".

All of the doctors highly trained in infection diseases or HIV strongly advice serodiscordant couples against relying on the "undetectable" and "on meds" thing to have unsafe sex. Dont forget that we dont master e v e r y t h i n g about this disease. Anything can suddenly cause his viral load to spike and that will put you in trouble waters my dear. Even with an undetectable viral load there can be transmission as undetectable DOES NOT mean 0. It simply means to todays standard "less than 20 copies(Viruses) per ml". I hope you keep in mind that only 1 virus is enough for infection to occur.

If you want to play Russian Roulette with your life. It's all on you.
