Just Found out I'm Positive
      #271331 - 03/23/13 10:54 PM

Hi,

I just received confirmation yesterday by western blot that I am in fact HIV positive. I wanted to share my situation to see if anyone else has been or experienced what I'm now facing. Just to give a little background.

I am a 43 year old professional guy. After 10 years of being in a very high level management position, I finally made the decision to leave my company. I had planned on taking some time off and exploring the possibility of moving to SW Florida where I have traveled frequently and have family living there. I have even gone as far as putting my house on the market. I typically make it a point to get tested each September, but this year let it slide as work pre-occupied most of my time. As I'm sitting on the sofa one night, I see a commercial for Oraquick, the HIV in home test. I run down to Wal- Mart the next day, buy the test, and after working up the courage I take the test. I was shocked to see a faint line where no line should have been. I couldn't believe it so I ditched the test, and go out to buy another. The next morning, I take the test and sure enough, once again, there is this faint line. I make an appointment to go to a clinic that afternoon where they performed a rapid test. I tested positive.

In this last week, I have come to terms with being positive, or accepted the fact that I am positive. (dealing with it is another issue) What I'm now having a problem with currently is how this will impact my decision in leaving my job, my insurance ( now waiting to get cobra going), and the possible move to Florida. Should I put my life on hold and try to figure all of this out? I have now been un- employed three weeks and was planning on leaving a week ago. Any thought would be greatly appreciated as I know this is a life changing experience. Thanks

Usually the best thing to do when facing something life altering is to keep whatever plans you had. Be normal, cause you are. It's no different than finding out you need to take better care of yourself and see the dr on a regular basis. If you can handle that you can handle HIV.

Just as Kicker said , Just move forward with life as planned. This diagnosis doesn't have to change your plans. Go ahead move , get settled do you insurance thing then after all is taken care of , and that is plenty of stress in itself, then look into finding a doctor and discuss your options. But take care of that after you've taken care of everything else. One thing at a time my friend. Giving up working and moving is enough to deal wih for now. And all the best to you with all that. It sounds like a wonderful plan .

Thanks to you and kicker for the response. It took me a year to make the decision to leave the job and make the move. I tend to internalize everything. I realize that life does go on and I will go forward with my plan, and I appreciate the reminder. I guess I'm just anxious to get to a specialist, to know my cd4 and viral load before making such a big leap.

Unless you plan on getting really really stressed out with moving (like pulling your hair out stressed) and unless you are going through ARS symptoms (which it doesn't sound like you are) chances are very good nothing will change much with your vl or cd4 counts.

Since you tested yearly you can say with some certainty that you were infected in the last year and a half. Your levels have evened out by now. They won't change a whole lot by moving. (Unless you're like me and get sick from moving, but I have another condition that makes any change very stressful) then you are good to go. Just do some research into the area. Find a local ASO or clinic that deals with HIV in your new location. Call and make an appt before you move for like a week after your planned move date. Then you won't worry about that cause it will be planned out already.

I know it's hard not to stress out about it, but chances are it will take a few weeks to get in with a HIV specialist where you are anyway. So why start with one and then have to go through it all again when you move. It's a pain in the ass with the paperwork and lab tests and the intake. So do yourself a favor and do it once. I made the mistake of doing it then moving, just to have to do it all over again within a months time. Believe me when I say it's better to just do it once. Lol

And Surgeon , Please stay in touch with us . Let us know how things are going. Even if you need a place to vent about your moving and such , those are 2 of the biggest things that a person can be doing . And I tip my hat to you . Sounds exciting really . Would love to hear about it as you go along .

You will be okay, I found Out I was positive a year ago, I was in shock and I still am sometimes but if you get on good med s and take care of yourself you will be fine and I know right now this might not help you but what I do I think of all the people out there with cancer and other dieases that are bad, yes we are sick but it is managed if we take care of ourselves and eat well.. Go to Fla I think your move is awesome and enjoy your life, don t let HIV get you down , you will be okay if you believe that in your heart. good Luck.

Hi, hope this finds everyone well. Just wanted to give a little update to where I'm at. It's now been a few months since I was diagnosed, and I can't express the gratitude I have to all of you who have been such a source of encouragement. I did follow your advice and kept up with my plans. I am now in Florida and in the process of buying a home here in St Pete. Plans are to close next Friday. I am probably more relaxed and calm than I have been in the past 20 yrs. Life has slowed down and I am taking more time to appreciate all the blessings and positive's in life than dwelling on the negative. Life is good at the moment. A few month's ago it was a totally different story. All I can say for anyone who reads this and is struggling with this diagnosis, hang in there. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and you will get thru this.

Just to give an update on my health. My doctor looked at me and just smiled. She said I have some really good news for you. My CD4 count was 861 and I had no viral load, undetectable. She said that this was rare in her practice with someone newly diagnosed. She said that my body was handling the virus well and that I might be what they refer to as an elite controller, but couldn't confirm that until a few more tests at 3 month intervals. So far, I am not on any medications. I hope this will be the case for many many years to come. Has anyone had that experience?

Anyway, much love to each of you. I am so appreciative of your support and encouragement.

That's great to hear. I am sure now that you see that you over worried for not. I am glad you took the advice, it really was the best advice anyone could give in that situation. You were able to get back to feeling normal just by being well normal.

I am happy for you and think you will do well now that you are over the initial surprise. Keep it up. There will be times you may want to go back to that, but don't. You will have a much better outcome if you don't in the long run. I have met many positive folks that have become bitter and just down right nasty when the subject of their status comes up. They regret way to much and are still stuck in the mindset that it changes everything, because they have allowed it. There's no reason for it. They do it to themselves and heaven forbid you tell them that. Let's just say it's like walking into a room full of hungry, cranky, toddlers with no food. Crying, yelling, kicking, screaming, tantrums, etc.

Hopefully you will stay at the levels you are, that is extremely encouraging. Keep up with the doctor even though they are good, they can always go the other way and there is no way to tell until it's really bad.

Just remember it isn't something to be afraid of or for that matter make part of your identity, it's something you have, not who you are.
