just found out I am positive
      #270926 - 03/02/13 01:48 PM

Hi there I am 34 year old male who found out I am poz on March 1 2013. I had 3 rapid tests that came back reactive, but a western blot that came back indeterminate. Then they did a test called CMIA that came back positive/reactive. Does anyone know if the CMIA test is used as a confirmatory test? There is not much information online about it... I am sad and cry sometimes. I am not angry because I think this is just a path that I am suppose to be on.

No, the CMIA is not used as confirmatory test. The CMIA is similar to the classic Elisa (just a different technique). You need this result to be confirmed with a positive Western Blot (WB) to confirm diagnosis. If the WB comes again intermediate your Dr. may ask for a PCR RNA.

Did you have a risk in the past weeks?

Thank you for responding to my question. As far as risk, I had sex with a a guy back in December (unprotected) there was no exchange of semen. I did not get any sort of "flu like" symptoms. The counselor at the clinic I went to made it sound as if the CMIA test was the confirmatory test. I go back next week for a ciral load, cmp, cvc, cd4 count and such forth.

HIV infection can ocurr with or without ejaculation. the key here is the unprotected sex. Some people also have 'symptoms' weeks after being infected, and some others don't show symptoms at all, that's why testing is so important.

CMIA is not used as confirmatory test (that's the function of the Western Blot). If you're indeed infected this will be reflected in the PCR RNA (viral load test). Fingers crossed this is a case of a false positive.

All the best.

I sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I'm not sure why they didn't redo your Western Blot, but it sounds like they believe they have tested you enough to make that call. Health care workers sometimes make decisions that might not make sense on the surface, but I'm sure they know more about your particular situation than anyone posting here. In any case you will know more after your appointment when you get your results.

As far as dealing with this. I will tell you the shock wears off and it gets better. It's been over 17 years but I clearly remember the shock of finding out. My world being turned upside down with 4 little words. "You are HIV positive". In other ways that all now seems to be a lifetime ago. Life goes on and we keep going. There is no reason you can't thrive with HIV. You will.

Hang in there.

So sorry to hear about you testing positive. I agree 100% with what was just written: this shock will become farther and farther from you as you go on. However, be kind to yourself, cry, feel your feelings, talk to trusted people, and take inventory of what matters to you. I was shocked beyond belief 8 years ago, but I am on anti-retrovirals, I am doing well, and I have learned to live with this virus. You will deal with this and get through the pain; you will learn to develop a regimen, sleep, diet, exercise, etc. that will fit YOU. Take care.

You are welcome! And just remember that there are some very exciting developments on the research front. We are all in this together and there are some very dedicated researchers and activists who are trying to bring about a cure. If there is anything I can do please just ask. Hugs to you

Oh! Oh! Me! Pick me! (ala Horseshack (RIP) from Welcome Back Kotter) I want to be the first to tell you everything that isn't true.

First let me tell you what the "religious right" would have to say about you're testing HIV+ --- You did it to yourself. It's a result of your sinning ways. It's a judgement from God. You're going to hell for eternity.

Want the reality?

HIV is a virus. ANYBODY in the world is susceptible to catching a virus. Some people cross the road without looking both ways is one way to put the risks associated with preventing its spread.

Assume the Western Blot was wrong, and you are HIV+. That's what everyone should assume about everyone else. None of this "I tested negative this afternoon" crap.

Be sad. Be happy. Be delusional, but make sure you can run fatser then the men with the large butterfly nets. Be yourself.

Being HIV+ is NOT the end of the world. Don't run up your credit cards. Don't burn down your house. Don't quit your job. You've got a long life ahead of you unless those busses fall out of the sky and land on you. Always gotta watch out for falling busses....

I've been HIV+ for well over 20 years. Well over! I deal everyday with people who have just found out they're positive; with people who have known they're positive for a few years; and with people who have known they're positive for longer than squares have had 4 sides. All of them (and you, I assume) have the same question first - how much longer have I got to live? Simple and best answer - noone knows. It wasn't known before you tested positive (assuming that you are). It's not known after the positive result comes back. You have to live your life the best that you can everyday. This is the path I beleive we should all consider ourselves on.

You'll discover one day in the future (near or distant is up to you) that HIV is merely a blip on that path you call life. Thanks to all the wonderful people who toil for use with little pay and fewer benefits (This includes everyone from the people who protest to get funding to researchers who create new meds to the staffs of the clinics we go to for treatment and more!) to show we will continue to exist and hopefully grow. The best thing you can do is to contribute in a beneficial manner to the world in which you exist. If nothing else work to support yourself the best you can. Noone ever said you had to do everything on your own, but you should at least offer to carry some of the blocks holding up your home.

I had a little trouble finding out about the CMIA test. Then I looked in the one spot you should always consider your first option for information about HIV/AIDS - thebody.com. I cam across this article with explains it without calling it a CMIA test - http://www.thebody.com/content/art57124.html

Continue to use this website for information both coming and going. An occasional post just to let the world know that you're alright and having a bright outlook on the world wouldn't be a bad thing....

He doesn't care River. He's been infected since 2010. I guess some people just don't have the 'balls' to handle living with HIV.

Hi there we chatted about a month ago. I do not know how well you are informed about HIV, but you sound like you know a great deal. So I had a pcr and another western blot. My viral load is 7000 and cd4 is 409. The doctor said I may have something in my system that is slowing the replication process down? She said normally when people have acute Hiv infection the viral load usually is a million or more and if someone has been infected with in the last 5 years, most people still have a relatively high viral load. I am fine with having HIV, but am curious why my viral load is so low? When I start taking the quad medication does it destroy HIV cells? If so since my immune system is handling the multiplication process so well do you think that my cells could destroy the rest of it off? The reason I ask is because my case had been weird from the start. 3 positive elisa, 1 indeterminate western blot, and then a positive western blot and a viral load of only 7000. I would have thought with the stress of finding out that I have HIV would cause the viral load to be extremely high and if I were just seroconverting that it would be high as well. I have thought to contact people who are in research and asking to be a case study for them? If you could let me know your thoughts about this :-)
