Hiv to AIDS in 2months
      #269893 - 12/29/12 03:07 AM

I tested positive in October, did my lab work in November and had an AIDS diagnosis in December. CD4: 132 virtual load: 500,000. I've been with my bf for only 1yr. Before him I was only with my kids father. I was tested when we split up. It was negative. He has been tested since ive tested positive and he is negative. So I know I've only been infected for less than a year. They also found precancerous cells on my cervix and had to have a biopsy. I was under the impression people could live 10-15yrs with HIV before getting an AIDS diagnosis. I don't know how I skipped over HIV and went straight to AIDS. I'm trying to keep it together and keep a smile on my face but its very hard. I still don't understand how my disease is so advanced.

It sounds like what put you in the AIDS category is your CD4 count. I had my count go down to 208, just above the level, within a few months of finding out. It was before I started medication which of course brought my count back up. Because of medication it's now easy for people that have a drop in their CD4's to regain them and thus go back up over that number threshold.

However it would be a reporting nightmare to reclassify everyone back and forth, so once we hit that number we get the classification.

Best thing to do is not focus on the term. Instead focus on your viral load and cd4 counts.

Many times but not for everyone when you start meds the virus trys to fight the meds by pumping up its amount of soldiers so to speak. Don't panic dear. Give the meds time to start knocking those buggers down abit each month. As for the precancerouse cervical cells that is a factor that we women are so blessed ( scarcasim ) to get. . It's not as uncommon as you may think. Men can get their own version of cancer. But that is why we need to understand the difference between men and women where Hiv is concerned. If you ever feel like talking to another female, I've been pos for over 20 years. Just send me a pm . I always respond.

Maybe this is ignorant but the whole AIDS classification doesn't make sense to me as with the meds we have now, unless you are resistant, it seems the meds will always bring your CD4 count up. With that being said, i don't think anyone should have to deal with the classificaiton of AIDS. That seems like a term sadly for earlier times when meds such as those we have today weren't available. I don't know, I just don't think the medical community should put that added stress of having that term. Maybe I'm just on rant but it's just added stress that isn't good for anyone especially those of us with HIV. My numbers are fine but I told my doctor if that day comes, I don't want any other classification than HIV. I told him put whatever you want in your records I don't care but don't tell me I have AIDS as i think it's just BS. The only way I will accept that term is if my body completely resists all the many medications that are available to me which I think and hope would be very rare. Don't let anyone put a term on you or put you in a category that you don't agree with. i see the whole doctor thing as a team and I don't allow my doctor to push me around. I'm in charge of my body and my care, he just gives me advice and his view on things and I decide whether or not I want to take it. Anyways sorry for the rant but don't let the doctor make you feel bad and if he does find another doctor.

Hi redtx12. I hope you know that everyone here is hoping for the best for you. As you have just started medication there is a good chance that the test results simply are an adjustment that your body is making. I hope that you give us an update, and that you are doing better!

Hi,

Don't be too alarmed just yet. Your high viral load and low CD4 count may actually be because you sero-converted very recently. A high viral load is to my knowledge normal during this initial phase.

Indeed, like you I tested positive recently and had low initial CD4 count -- something like 270 -- and a high viral load around 197,000. I had also tested negative about a year before that and I am pretty sure I got this not too long before I got the positive test result.

This threw me for a real loop and the doctor got me on meds right away. About 3 months after starting on meds my viral load is down to around 170 and my cd4 count has jumped to 880.

This may very well be the case with you too, so just take your meds and take care of your health. I hope you feel better soon.

I don't understand why there is a problem with the term aids, it's just a word. What counts is how you feel. I was diagnosed as " full blown Aids " 20 years ago. The term " Full blown" is what threw me for a loop at first, but now 20 years later , 18 on meds , though I'm still and will always be classified as " aids " it is just another word. If someone calls me a poop head do I get all bent out of shape, no of course not. Its just a term.. So please folks don't get your panties in a bunch over something that really is irrelevant. Matter of fact this so called illness has taught me not to sweat the small stuff in life. Just move ahead and and keep on living. Call yourself what you want , even if it's poop head.

Hey Redtx12!

You sound SO familiar. When I was diagnosed and told (due to my low CD4 count) I was technically defined as having AIDS my exact question was "Don't I get to be just HIV positive for a while?" That was over 10 years ago. My Doctor belived in hitting the virus with both barrels and put me on "the cocktail of 3 meds" immediately. My viral load became undetectable in just 3 months and has remained undetectable ever since. My CD4 gradually rose every six months until I was in the 'normal' range in less than 2 years. That was 8 years ago. My CD4/CD8 ratio has about maxed out at the top! We've learned maintaining "undetectability" is the key to long-term health. I have a GREAT Doctor, I strictly follow my once a day Atripla dosing and I am told to expect a healthy life. So don't fear "skipping" the HIV place in time. It's not really that big of a deal.

My dear do not get yourself stressed because you will be fine.I was diagnose 2 years ago but realised that I was infected 17 years ago. When I started my treatment my health improved and my CD4 count was initial 260 but it is above 500 now.I have regular Gynaecological check up to rule out cervical cancer as well.Just live positively and eat health food.
