Persistent cold not going away
      #273517 - 08/21/13 03:12 PM

Dear all,

My father is on ART since almost 7 years. He is doing fine with other things, except, over the last few months, he has developed cold that just doesnt go away. The doctors say that its allergy due to weakened immune system. He takes Nasivion drops when his nose gets really blocked. Does anyone have the experience of solving this problem for their loved ones?

Thanks in advance

I can't say that I do specifically, though it is common for a person with a weaken immune system to have inflammation of the nasal passage. This can cause recurrent bouts of sinus infections and cause the persons nose to run. It's quite common to see this in someone who has a low cd4 count and isn't a huge concern for the most part. (Btw I am not a doctor, you should consult one first before trying any of these.)

If you want to go the holistic route, saline nasal washes are great for clearing out the area where most colds take hold; the nose. They can actually prevent colds and shorten the duration of colds. It also helps with allergies. One cliff note though and it's a biggie. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE USE TAP WATER! Buy saline solution from the drug store. Yes it is expensive for water, but it's water that is ph neutral and won't run the risk of having brain eating protozoa in it. I'm dead serious. Even boiled tap water will still harbor those little buggers. So only use saline solution from a pharmacy for nasal irrigation that goes for anyone, but especially HIV+ individuals.

The next option would be something I normally do when it's allergy season. That's taking 1 advil every 12 hours and using flonase or claritin daily. Along with staying inside in A/C controlled environment.

One thing you may want to check is your HVAC unit if you have one and seeing if the filter needs to be cleaned and or replaced. As well check your ducts if you have them. After long term use your ducts can harbor billions upon billions of allergens, bacteria, and viruses. Blown around every time the system kicks on. If it's dirty see if you can get them cleaned. A lot of utilities will offer assistance or incentives to their customers for doing this. Also check that your air filter is the best one you can get for your system. (This also cuts down on heating and cooling costs win win)

Of course don't take any meds before talking to your doctor about possible interactions to what he is currently on. Also watch the humidity levels. To dry or to wet isn't good. Humidity should be between 30%-60%. To much or too little will cause more sinus problems and colds.

If it's running also don't put a tissue up there to catch it. Use a baby ear wax remover (blue ball shaped baster) to remove it or gently blow it out. Blowing to hard or shoving things up there can cause the phlegm to get backed up and clog his sinus cavities causing even more problems. Of course after using anything to clear it out you should wash it in hot water and soap really well before using it again.

It will take some time for any of those to have a cumulative effect, but they should show signs of working within a day or two with full benefits in roughly 2 weeks. I won't promise it will completely solve the problem, but it won't hurt it and you may see some improvement if you use several methods.

Good luck!
