advise for telling my teenage
      #269483 - 12/06/12 10:46 PM

Anyone with advise on telling children. I haven't coped myself but people are taking my right to privacy and telling my story. I wanted to shelter her and my son a few more years but may be forced now. Help

Kids are amazing in their ability to handle stuff with a little help. Mine each got told when I felt it was time, which turned out to be about 10 - 11 for each. Old enough not to talk out of school about it. Young enough to not completely understand the implications of it.

So the best thing is sit them down and talk to them about it. Calm any fears they may have that you will die on them in the next week and answer any questions they have. It's a great opportunity to start teaching them how HIV is transmitted. It's a process. Over the years they may have more questions and you will have more opportunity to talk to them about safe sex. I was adamant about condom use, but my kids did understand the reason. They also grew up with the knowledge about HIV that allowed them to be aware, but not to be freaked out. I like to think I've reduced the stigma of this disease by a couple of people in this world.

It's not easy telling them, but it will work out.

Good luck.
