Small group of patients were able to stop taking Aids drugs without any resurgence of the virus

This is why testing soon after you had a risk is SO important:

I think it is only a matter of time until a full-on cure is developed.

Well it IS important but probably not for that reason. Doctors in some countries (like mine), do not prescribe meds until the CD4 dips below 350. Sigh.

Then again, if this turns out to be universal; ie existing HAART therapy can functionally cure HIV or prevent HIV if initiated soon after exposure, I think that goes a long way in terms of ending the stigma and discrimination. It would be just like taking a morning-after pill.

I can personally attest to the importance of early identification. I got tested and was positive around the end of my sero-conversion. My viral load was like 194,000 and cd4 was 266 and 21%.

I started HAART immediately and two months on my viral load is like 199 and my cd4 is 882 and 35%. Even if you aren't lucky enough to be like the Visconti group, the faster you get treated the better for your immune system.
