Does anyone know about hiv2? The problem was brought up in conversation between myself and my partner. When I did a search, there is really not much on the topic.. Looking for more information.

It's pretty much only found in certain parts of Africa. I think that's all most people need to know, haha

I wouldn't sign off on the guilt just yet. I think you and your partner have a lot of talking to do. HIV is like the flu, last I checked a pig doesn't equal a bird.

My apologies to riverprincess and everyone else for my rude message - it didn't occur to me how vile I sounded until I read it back just now. I meant to say that HIV-2 is rarely found outside certain parts of Africa, so it doesn't have be a major concern for most people imo. I guess I just wanted to help ease the stress somehow, as I know how scary it is doing HIV research online.

There are 2 types of HIV. Type 1 and Type 2. Whenever anybody simply refers to HIV it is generally assumed that they are discussing Type 1. Type 2 is generally found in West Africa and not other parts of the world. Not exclusively, but generally.

Both are transmitted the same way.

But, Type 2 is usually more difficult to transmit. There is also a longer incubation period in the body between infection and resulting illnesses.

Because of it's limited impact of the world there has been less research done into the field of treatment of Type 2. Many of the meds used to treat Type 1 also work against Type 2. But, because of the tiny difference between the 2 types not all do.
