what can I expect at my first dr visit?
      #273487 - 08/18/13 01:00 PM

I'm just wondering what I should expect at my first Dr visit other than blood work? I'm I going to have to get undressed & all of that? I just want to be prepared.

Also I'm just wondering when I go to the Dr for something non HIV related are they able to see all my records & know I'm positive? There are just some instances in which I don't feel that information is important & would prefer for it to be keep private...

Hey Tippy , Let me tell you what I go throughwhen I go for mydrs visit. I first see nurse, she takes BP, and checks temp. Askes how I have been felling? If I have had any diareaha ( and don't be embarrassed ) , night sweats , eating ok and takes my weight. She'll ask when last period was and when teeth and eyes were last checked. She records this infor. Then when I see the dr he checks my heart , listens to my lungs , will look in my mouth ( say awwww) and because I have Hep he will have me lay down and press on my liver area. You are still dressed . He will ask how your feeling . And that is the time you can ask questios with him And if you have any questions for the nurse ask her also when you are seeing her. It really is very simple. If your on meds he'll ask haow your feeling with them , . You can ask how your vl is and your t cells. If you have some things you want to talk to him about write them down and bring it with you.

Look up to the Heavens for the answers to Lifes questions .

If its your first appointed after being diagnosed they will probably do lab work to check your current viral load and cd4 count. If they are going to start medication they will usually do a genotype test to make sure you don't have strain resistant to treatment. If you have never been on medication it will probably come back normal.
If it is a new doctor you should expect a complete check up . It's like a physical and they may test you for other diseases which could be complicated by your HIV. (TB, hepatitis, syphilis, herpes, etc)
A good doctor will schedule you for vaccinations to prevent some illnesses and decide if you need to start medication.

Be honest with your doctor and fill them in on any problems you're having. They are better equipped to help you with all the information.

Hope this helps.
