HIV Negative AIDS.
      #132487 - 01/03/05 01:56 AM

Am I the only one this does not make sense to? If HIV causes AIDS than how can the lack of it also cause AIDS?

I have read the explinations but they seem contrived. Has anyone else had doubts about this? I would love to hear your views.

Jessie

Jessie.....Hey thats my name too! =)
I am not sure what exactly you are asking? HIV is the virus that causes aids...YES!!!!! So what is the question? I think it all boils down to numbers/t-cells/viral oad/percentages and how your body adjusts and takes to different combo's of medication....Diagnosis is also very important...If you are diagnosed sooner you have a better chance of not having AIDS per say...Being dx with aids (I think) just makes you more vulnerable to infections...although even with HIV you are vulnerable to infections.....Aids is not reversable....neither is HIV...once you got it..you got it!!!!! How you resond to meds and how your body's immune system deplets is another story.....People with a dx od aids have a much more compromised immune defiency....their immune system is not working on its own without meds to help keep up healthier numbers to decrease further deterioration to their immune systems...diet and exercise plans a big role in this as well....

I am not sure if this is what you are asking....you can always ask the experts if you dont get the asnwers here that you are looking for....good luck and hope I was able to help even a little....~Jessie~

Jessie,

You said: "Aids is not reversable".

If you have under 200 t-cells you have Aids. Once you start drugs and your t-cells go above 200, you don't have Aids anymore.

So Aids IS reversable, Right???

Like Jessie said once your T-Cells/CD4 Cells drop below 200 you will be diagnosed with AIDS, the diagnosis is not usually reversed so you can file for disability, be eligible experimental drugs, etc. But getting your T-cells back above 200 then above 350 is beneficial for health reasons alone, cause you will reduce the risk of Opportunistic Infections/Diseases, etc.

Once you are diagnosed with aids you have aids. It does not mean death...it just means that your counts have dropped below 200 and that puts you in the aids category. Your counts can and probably will go up but the doctor will not say that you now have HIV again. At least that is what I have read and have been told. To me, they are really one in the same sorta....~Jessie~

Jesse
You are right that once you are diagnosed with Aids (under 200 t-cells) it stays with you forever.
BUT clinically if your t-cells go above 200 you DON'T have Aids anymore (again clinically)
My t-cells were below 200 when I found out I was positive, they are now 700, I am not in the Aids category anymore. Most doctors will say you don't have Aids if you are above 200.
They are NOT one and the same.

I think Jessie was asking why if HIV is the caause of AIDS how you can still have AIDS with no HIV.

It does appear to be a contradiction. It confuses me too.

Does everyone have AIDS? Surely not. Something is mixed up or wrong with this picture.

So if I understand you right then AIDS is being told you have AIDS. You can be HIV positive or HIV negative and still have AIDS.

So what does the virus have to do with having AIDS?

The more I read, the more confused I get.

Sorry if I seem stupid but it does not make sense to me.

You have AIDS if your HIV positive and fall under the AID diagnosis guidelines.

Now as for being HIV negativa and having AIDS like illnesses, diseases etc, that would be a due to another immune comprimised issues.

So AIDS can be cured? Or is AIDS just a low t-cell count?
What exactly are you saying?

No real cure for HIV/AIDS.

Just the various anti-HIV medications, that help your immune system fight the HIV, and try to keep your CD4/T-cell counts above the AIDS level of 200 and lower the Viral Load to undetectable.

But I thought you said that if your count is over 200 you don't have AIDS? Withut HIV what other marker is there?

Also if you can have AIDS without testing positive what exactly is AIDS?

The defiinition of AIDS seems to be getting just a little blurred.

Jessie10,

Listen...HIV is when you have a higher t-cell count of 300-400 or over.

you are diagnosed with Aids if your t-cells go lower than 200.

When you have aids and are not on a specific theaputic med regimn then you are more likely to be exposed to life-threatening diseases.....

You are also exposed to life threatening disease when you are diagnosed with HIV-Only difference is that your body is able to help fight(IMMUNUE SYSTEM IS A BIT STRONGER) of infection, disease and other oppo. infections....

Exercise and diet can help play a KEY ROLE in keeping a healthy cd4/t-cell count and a lower viral load, although, even with healthy diet and exercise the HIV virus can progress....Meaning that your t-cells start to deplete and your viral load goes up....When this happens, your doc(HIV SPECIALIST) usually will discuss with the patient possibility of going on medication to stop the HIV from progressing to AIDS.

I hope that this has clarified some of the questions as I am writing I too am getting confused as to what exactly you want to know...I think that others as well as myself have tried to answer your question as good as we possibly could...Good luck to you!!!! ~#1Jessie~ =)........

Some scientists, including Kary Mullis, inventor of PCR, claim that HIV does not necessarily cause AIDS. You can read more about it here : http://www.virusmyth.net/aids/data/kmreason.htm
