Early Symptoms?
      #159292 - 08/30/05 12:13 PM

About 10 weeks ago I had sex with a man I have since heard has hiv. We didn't use a condom. I couldn't wait the full twelve weeks so I took a 9 week at home that came back negative. However, I have a cough I can't seem to shake and had a yeast infection for the first time ever but it is clearing up with treatment. Do these sounds like HIV symptoms?

Thank you for your help!!!

one thing I have learned is that symptoms do not equal hiv. You can not diagnose yourself by a symptom or even a list of symptoms. You had a negative test at 9 weeks, and that is great!!! three more weeks test again for peace of mind. yeast infections are very common and a cough could be from allergies or post nasal drip or many other things! I know you are scared..I will pray for you.

Your negative test is very encouraging. Most people show antibodies by that time. But you do need to test again at 13 weeks to be sure. And the previous poster was correct -- you CANNOT use symptoms to diagnose HIV infection. There are too many viruses out there that produce exactly the same effects.

Now I'm confused. Is it 13 weeks or 3 months (12 weeks)?

cough is not a symptom of hiv .......9 weeks is more than enough time for a result you could test again but it will be the same, most people have positive results 3-5 weeks after infection , massachusetts uses the 6 week window and of course the cdc says 13 weeks , most doctors tell you 12 weeks...once again cough is not a symptom , that is a dead give away that it is not ars

Well, I think they say 13 weeks because most months are slightly longer than 4 weeks. You've got to account for a few extra days each month. But will this have a material effect on your HIV test? Probably not.
