Recent AID's Diagnosis: What should I expect?
      #90665 - 02/26/04 05:26 PM

I am a hetereosexual, non-drug user who has been living with HIV for 13 years. I was just officially Diagnosed with AIDS because of my percentages (11%). My CD4's are 262 and Viral 1801. I didn't realize how uneducated I was on AID's until now. Where can I look for questions on what to expect & avoid now? Or does anyone have any helpful anwers? Can anyone tell me statisticly, how long is the average life expectancy? I know this is taboo among professionals but I believe education is empowering!!! And I want to know, so maybe I can break the boundaries. Please HELP!!!!

Are you on medications? Being diagnosed with AIDS may not be so meaningful if you are under good care from an HIV specialist.

I've been on 2 different treatment regimes since December that I have had to be removed from because of the extreme naseau and side effects. I will be slowly starting Norvir AGAIN on Monday. Mr regular Dr. is an immunologist specializing only in HIV/AIDS. He is one of the BEST in my area and I have been seeing him for 13 years. He says at this time, I have no clearly identified OI's.

Hi there!
I have been HIV positive since January 1987, when I found out, I was 7 months pregnant AND my husband had just passed away. ( he was unaware of his HIV status, ) Now, 17 years later, I am remarried and my daughter is NOW 17. I also remarried a few years ago and have another daughter who just turned 5 YEARS OLD. Both my daughters are healthy and NEGATIVE. I have remained HIV POSITIVE, WITH NO SYMPTOMS. I have been on and off meds for years!! I have been on NO meds at all in over 5 years! My t cells are near only 300 and viral load is about only 3000. I remain positive in mind and spirit.....yes, my current husband is also positive & has no symptoms. I have always believed a posiitive outlook in life is a big help!! thank you & good luck, keep healtny & strong, postive mind

You are actualy not in that bad of shape. There are several meds that can bring your t cell count back to a normal level. I would reccomend listening to your doctor but screen what he says. The first regimen that you would go on is sustiva and combivor. Take ambien for the sleep dis orders caused by the sustiva.

If this does not work then find something on the body to replace it. Do not let your doctor choose you regimen on his own. It's fast food.

Have you tried Susteva and Combivir? This is the cheapest, most tollerated regimen known at this point in time. Norvir is not well tolerated and is expensive.

Yes, I have tried Sustiva and tolerated it well but became resistant Jan 2003. My doctor is still trying combivar in all my combinations. Right now he determined to put me on Norvir, combivar,(both tried with other med & made me sick), and Viread. I'm starting to lose hope cause my poor 115 lb can't handle much.

This board helps me to have a much more positive attitude toward this disease. I have read many posts of people who have been in your shoes and have found the proper regimen and done very well. I know that it is easy for me to say this. I think that you will do well when this gets straightened out. It sounds like you have the will.

I was diagnosed with AIDS in July of 04 with a CD4 of 57 and VL of 262,000 and am now up to a undetectable VL status and 188 CD4. As long as you keep positive and take care of yourself you will be fine. Take your meds as told and take care of yourself
