Condoms apparently not as effective as possible
      #8615 - 08/19/00 01:05 AM

So I just got tested because it turns out my boyfriend just tested positive last week. We have *no* idea where he could have picked this up, because other than me he has only had one partner who he hasn't slept with in two years and who also tested negative recently. As for me, I had surgery last year, and the HIV counsellor I saw assures me that they test you for HIV prior to surgery. Additionally, I have *never* had sex without a condom, although it did slip off of my boyfriend twice. We stopped right away, however. Of the two of us, I've had more partners and am therefore considered more at risk, but he's the one who has tested positive, so signs point towards me having given it to him. I'm pretty much worried sick, although the counsellor tells me that she would *never* have picked me as someone who would contract HIV, that I have less than a one percent chance of having gotten it, etc. But my boyfriend, who I trust implicitly, must have gotten it from somewhere. Waiting for my tests to return, I feel alternately panicked and dirty.

And I did everything right, so they tell me.

I just wanted to say that you are not alone. I contracted HIV through an ex boyfriend of mine in pretty much exactly
the same way as you. The condom came off on two separate occasions. I couldn't believe that I tested positive
because my risk factor was the same as yours too. I was diagnosed at 23 yrs old, and I'm 25 now. I had my whole life ahead of me. Luckily I have a wonderful husband now, who married me full well knowing my condition. I guess my point is that I'm glad I'm not the only woman that this has happened to( meaning in these exact circumstances)
and I hope you're glad you're not the only one either!!!

Your boyfriend is NOT telling you the whole story. He's had to have other exposures!
Did you get any blood transfusions in your surgery? GOOD LUCK with your test!!! let us know here what happpens!

Hi:
I don't know if you check this often, but your story struck me because I am in a similar bind. I hope that your test turned out negative, by the way. I just tested positive. My b/f was the one who gave the virus to me. He told me that he had been with only one partner for five years. They had a child together two years ago who tested negative (she apparently was not on AZT) or anything during the pregnancy. It threw me for a loop. I am still trying to cope with it all.

I used to say the same exact thing, because I did not want to believe that I was one who was at high risk from the early eighties. Well, one day I came down with pneumonia, The antibiotics that were prescribed, made me vomit and have diahrea, I lost 15 pounds in nine days. I was rushed to emergency where I was asked to take THE TEST. At first I refused, then 10 minutes later I came to my senses. I was diagnosed as having pcp pnuemonia. Thank god I took THE TEST now I take my medications and I am living my life with this disease.

They assured you that they tested you prior to a surgery? I had surgery and they took blood but I never heard that there was an HIV test given?
