We are both hiv positive. We want to have a baby.
      #79118 - 12/11/03 11:14 AM

My husband and I have been HIV positive for approximately one (1) year. We live in a caribbean country where people are grossly ridiculed for having the virus. We are afraid to go to any local doctors to obtain information re: the possibilty of us having children, because the information might "spread" and our lives and our careers would be destroyed. I am asking for help. Could any one give me an answer?

Thank You
Joyous.

To sucessfully do this you must see a doctor. You will decrease your chances of giving the disease to the child if you take the anti-retrovirals during your pregnancy. If you don't, the risk is fairly high that you will have a child that will have the disease at birth or will develop HIV within 3 months of birth. As bad as you want a child I know you do not want to have a child who will suffer with this illness. Please be careful. This is one of those times you will have to put aside you and your needs and fears and think only of your baby.
Best wishes to you. I will pray for you tonight.

The risk is not "Fairly high" The risk is fairly low. Only 25% of a chance if you do absolutely nothing and just have the baby. But it depends on many many factors. There's less of a risk of transmitting HIV if your viral load is undetectable, if you have a c-section and if you have a knowledgeable OBYGYN. If you have any money whatsoever I would suggest you go for an initial consulation in Miami or puerto rico where there are excellend specialists. And then give birth in either of these places...this way you can keep this whole thing confidential.

Dear Joyous,

This has been a hot topic on this forum. What you are saying is that even if the "locals" knew you were positive you would be ostracized and lose your jobs? Then how do you anticipate proper health care much less exposing an unborn child to HIV? Ultimately many children are born without the virus but you are still putting your child at risk for being stigmatized in your location in particular, and your own shortened life span. Read through the archives there is much written here on this topic.

PEACE,
Karen

You know,
This post makes absolutely no sense. Whatever terrible, angry message this person was trying to get across is lost in the poorly written message. Thank goodness!
This sounds just like ole' truckdriver. Maybe he's returned to his druggie habits...this post sure looks like it.

It's sad, isn't it? I almost feel bad for these losers-- What do they do? Sit arounf their trailer parks, drinking their $2 economy-size malt liquor while searching the Internet for innocent people to annoy? They are in serious need of mental help..
