I just found out that I'm HIV Positive
      #64695 - 05/05/03 02:12 PM

Hello Eveyone, This is my first time here. I'm so thankful I found this site.

I found out 4 weeks ago that I'm HIV Positive. I'm still dealing with the news. It all started when I rec'd a rejection letter from an insurance company that I applied for. When I took the letter to my doctor..and had a 2nd test done...it was confirmed that I'm HIV positive. I was attacked on a subway and stuck in the arm with an infected needle.

I'm just so hurt, angry and confused. I don't know what to do next. I'm trying to get as much information as I can. I'm so scared. I haven't told my kids or my family yet. I've been divorced for a year now..and I told him. But he's been no support to me at all about it. I feel like it's all my fault...I just don't know what I could've done to preveny it from happening. I re-play the incident over and over in my head. I feel so alone and scared...

I haven't started taking any Meds yet. I've just taken a series of blood tests to see my viral load, etc.

Thanks for reading my post. I would great appreciate any advice or information about other site where I can get more information.

Thank you

This is a really hard time for you. Just try to maintain some normalcy in your life and get a plan together for what you will do about this. The first thing is you need a good doctor to treat this disease. You need a specialist in HIV and that can be found in any major university based medical community, like Baylor College of medicine in Houston, Medical College of Virginia, or Johns Hopkins Hospital in Boston or by doctors who are certified to treat HIV ( see the web site http://www./aahivm.org). Next you need to start the process of getting insurance. Since you will not be able to get private insurance you may need to get a job or change jobs so that you can work for a large company with a group plan. Even with this preexisting condition they can deny you benefits for a specified length of time but not forever. Then you need to focus on getting educated. Learn about the meds, learn about what you can do and not do sexually. And become an expert in your own care.
Lastly, know that this is not a fatal disease. With meds this is a treatable disease that you can live with for a long time...twenty years or more!!!
When I was diagnosed I spent months in a fog and expected to die at any time. I've had this disease since before there were very many meds to treat it but I am on meds now, my viral load is undetectable, my immune system is functioning well and I have a great life...in the meantime, I have lost friends to breast cancer, automobile accidents and heart disease...all in all this diagnosis is not nearly as bad as it seems in the beginning.
Best wishes to you as you find your level ground to cope with this! I founde mine and I am feeling good about my life.

Are you sure you got it from being attacked on the subway??? That would have made the newspapers.

Thank you so much for replying..I really appreciate it. I was able to find a very good specialist. My VL is in the low 500's. I'm still trying to cope and gather up my strength to fight this.

Thanks again.

Despite being pos for 13 years, I continue to be single and alone in Vancouver. I hope to meet some one soon because spring is here today and gone tomorrow.

Dear Friend~

After reading your post i am sending you so much strength & courage. You were attacked on the subway & injected? Is that something that happens often in big cities?
Please know that you are NOT alone! The circumstances of my infection were not as traumatic (althought it was a shock as well) as yours, but, here we are in the same boat & staying afloat one day at a time.
My prayers are with you & your children. BTW, if yr in a large city, you likely have women's Support Groups.
