AIDS mom & child
      #59567 - 02/27/03 11:40 PM

I was recently diagnosed with AIDS and found out that my 5 year old boy has AIDS as well. He should be entering kindergarten this year and my husband (who is negative) is especially concerned about putting our child in school and exposing him to all of the illnesses passed around at school. He wants to home school him. I am also concerned, but believe it is important for his social skills, self esteem, etc. to continue life as normal as possible. We are both on meds now and CD4 counts getting higher and viral load undectable. Want some input from other mothers of kids with AIDS. Thanks.

I have no kids. But I have HIV. Most kids with HIV I know are in school. It's better to go to a school for social reasons. I mean your child shouldn't have to feel ostracized just because he has HIV.
Read this about basic care:

See a doctor that specializes in pediatric AIDS and try to find other moms that have kids with HIV so that you won't feel so worried about your kid. He can live a normal live. Don't isolate him!

Life is full of ups and downs. Always prepare for the worse and be grateful for any joy! Proceed with caution! Be brave and you will deal with whatever happens. Remember, all of us on earth are guaranteed nothing--not happiness nor health. So we all live with the possibility of challenge!
Get support from someone you trust! It really helps!

How sad. This is the exact reason why all pregnant women should get tested for the virus. Transmission to your unborn child did not have to happen.

I am new to this site. If you had been around to make that observation about six years ago, it may have been helpful. Now it is just restating the obvious and is hurtful, not helpful. Is that the type of positive input that I can expect here? No thank you. I get plenty of that in every day life.
