Why HIV/AIDS now, during my lifetime?
      #4006 - 05/16/00 09:38 AM

I wish I could understand more about HIV/AIDS. I know alot, but it never seems to be enough.

I have herpes (caught in 97) and I have had anxiety attacks ever since about HIV/AIDS. I know that my body now has an entry point for HIV/AIDS.

The last time I was tested was in 98, but I can't bring myself to get tested again. I know deep down that if I am, I will feel like my life is over, and I will feel like I failed my son (leaving him and he already has no father).

Since 97, I've been with about 3 guys (2 of which I told about the disease), and each of them, there was a time when the condom broke. When that happened, each and every time I had an anxiety attack.

How will I know I have it - what are some symptoms other than fatigue and swollen lymph nodes? For HIV and AIDS?

It's not that easy to get HIV. The question really is: Are you having sex when you have Herpes outbreaks? If so this would make it easier of HIV and other sexually transmitted disease to get into your blood stream. Just get tested if you worry. You are probably negative. And if you are positive, there are such good treatments now that you could raise your kid without problem. But if you are positive and don't get tested, then you would not benefit from the great treatments. It's like not getting a mammogram, or doing breast exams cause you're afraid of what you will find--if you don't find lumps early, you will be sicker. Same logic.

Good luck! It's not easy but it's really the best for both you and your kid.
