      #27704 - 02/01/02 09:48 PM

I just found out I am pregnant. But I'm positive and really worried. Will I get sicker? will my baby die? Does anyone know about this? laura K.

Find yourself a good ob gyn who has a lot of expereince with HIV positive women (ask your local AIDS organization for a referral) and speak to your HIV specialist --if your doctor doesn't have extensive experience, seek another doctor who does! Good luck!

Please take some time to yourself. Think about what you really want. Not what's right or wrong. Once you have decided what you want take time to research your options and then do what's safe for you and your baby. I found out that i was pregnant two months ago and positive. I panicked and terminated it. The thing i regret the most is that i didn't give myself the chance to think it through.

Do your research and think it through. Don't make any rash decisions.

As far as the medications that have been mentioned: I've read a number of things. I've reports of studies that say drugs used to reduce transmission of HIV to a child bolth only a little and very much. At the same time I read a number of studies that say babies that inherit HIV from a mother taking aids medications have less of a chance of surviving. Just recently I found one that claims mothers who takes certain aids meds(I don't remeber which) raises the chances of deformities by about 150%. Basicly I've seen studies that claim reduced transmission, but no studies that show aids medications will lessen the chances of babies dieing.

You're in for some hard choices. Some mothers choose to abort the child. Some mothers choose to manage it with medications and still yet others choose not to use anything extra besides a normal pregnacy to avoid the side effects of medications. Of the mothers who keep their children their are lots of cases were their children lived very well and lots of cases were they die. This is wheter or not they took aids medications which the dissenters and medical mainstream argue about a lot. Personnally I favor the dissenters but that's your choice.

I actually just discovered that my response to you was deleted just because I shared my knowledge. That really makes me wonder. Anyway congratulations. Try not to worry. You need to relax and do some research. Yes I have heard that AZT has claimed to reduce transmission however I also know that likelihood of transmission is very low anyway. Take care of yourself and your body and take your prenatal vitamin, its very important. AZT is also responsible for several documented deaths of infants and deformaties. Those are very toxic drugs. Please make wise choices, and you and your maybe shall live a long healthy life. Take Care, and all the luck in the world.

Hi I am Hiv positive also and I just had a healthy baby boy
july 9th and he is not inffected with the virus I also have a 4 year old I was positive when I had him also. I am not going to tell you don't worry cause that is natural but just make sure to take your medication everyday and pray on it. I'm sure everything will be fine but please don't stress yourself because that might cause other complications. Oh and don't let those doctors stress you out either and try and make you feel guilty about having a baby and you are positive either believe me I know.

Sincerely Tonya

P.S. Good Luck
