YEAST and SCARED!! PLEASE help
      #238795 - 04/26/08 09:18 PM

Hi- I have a question regarding recurring yeast infections... In Feb '08 had BV, treated and then got a yeat inf and UTI- treated and fast forward to today April- much pain down there and some discharge. GYN checked me out and said it prob was another form of yeast. took cultures and blood. I know I have not STDs including Herpes as I was tested in Feb but am worried these recurring problems are HIV... Had an unprotected incident a few months ago ... awaiting my results (coming Monday)- REALLY scared and worried. My question is, for those of you who found out due to recurring yeast infections, did this occur in the early HIV stages? My doc said she sees this in patients who are advanced in their HIV illness. My immune system doesn't appear to be low as I have a normal CBC (8.0 on a 4.0-10.0 scale) I know this isn't a clear indicator of HIV status, but am wondering if this could at least show my immune system is not compromised due to a serious underlying cause. Could anyone help me? I am so scared and can't function!!
I don't know what to do- cant talk to anyone! My boyfriend doesn't want to hear it! I am so alone and so afraid... taking xanax to calm myself but it is not working... I keep thinking the worst and have nowhere to turn... please provide some insight- am I overreacting? thank you and I'll let you know how it goes come Monday... please send me good karma...
I have to admit that reading this website really encouraged me to get tested as I thought I would never muster up the courage to do it... Please help me!!!

I too, have read that recurring yeast infections is something found in the later stages of the illness. So far, after 12 years I still don't have that problem.

There is another poster here, that has recently been told her recurring infections are due to a resistant bacterial infection that is becoming more common from improper use of antibiotics all these years. You have had BV. Perhaps yours is a resistant strain also. Bring it up with your doctor.

You can not go by symptoms. PERIOD. It's only the test result that matters.

Esmeralda, Thanks for your input... I find out on Monday about the test... I am only 26 years old and have had a few yeast infections before this..about 3? but NOT this repeatedly....I'm certain that if I did test positive, I would have been infected very recently... that's why I am curious if the yeast infections would manifest themselves so early in the illness. And if so, it would be assumed that my CBC wouldn't have been so good, since these infections would be resulting from a suppressed immune system, no??
I understand the importance of the test, but can't help but be extremely overwhelmed with anxiety... thank you for your input... God bless

My CBC's and lymphocyte counts were always normal and when I tested positive and I had a CD4 of 183..so it wasn't a recent infection. Esmeralda is correct, the test is the final word, not the symptoms. Yes, it is scary waiting..but scarier not to know so you did the right thing by getting tested. I wish you luck. I hope you are negative..but if you are positive we are here for you. Take care and let us know what happens.

UPDATE new
      #238848 - 04/29/08 10:23 AM

Hi everyone. ... wanted to post an update for this thread... NEGATIVE HIV- past window period so I am taking my results as conclusive- still haven't found the culprits for my ailments but I have hope that I will soon.... Wanted to give my update in case anyone who comes across this wonders what happened. I know I do when I read symptoms posted and rarely see the end result- causes me to worry more. EVERYONE here is right- you can't go by symptoms, nor can you go looking for them. Also get the courage to take the test- The Body really helped me find the strength to do it... I'm going to continue therapy to figure out all this anxiety I had about HIV, but now realize its not worth your time to compare symptoms and fret about having it... Soo glad I didn't spend more time doing it.... THANK YOU AGAIN and God bless you all!!!

I'm glad to hear your test was negative, that's great news,I have a question, did your boyfriend get treated at the same time as you for the yeast infection? He could have it without symptoms and be giving it to you during sex.Even if you use condoms do you use a dental dam for oral sex?How about any sex toys you may use?I know, pretty personal,I don't really expect you to answer them, just something to think about since you say the infection keeps coming back.

Thanks for responding and the good karma--- I've seen you on the boards and am impressed by your words and wisdom... nothing too personal here... we're watching out as it may be a possibility that he keeps giving me back this yeast- he is uncircumcised and I've read somewhere that this harbors more infections, etc... My doc says that doesn't happen but I can't see why it wouldn't be a factor!! After getting checked for EVERYTHING and taking Diflucan which hasn't worked I am still in incredible pain. Everything is neg-- I did test for presence of candida so it could be a resistant monstrous strain!! To make a long story short I received another medication which hopefully will work and will be keeping an eye out if my bf keeps giving me back this yeast... thanks for the insight and help!! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!

Congratulations on the Negative result! Take a deep breath, and maybe you'll relieve the stress that might be causing this yeast issue. Understand, it's not so much a lack of immunity that causes a yeast infection. Instead, it can easily be a deficiency of cultures in your diet (yogurt every day = a WHOPPING 40% increase in recovery for reoccurring yeast). Sometimes sensitivities to tampons, sperm, fragrances, friction, even what you clean your clothes with will cause irritation and upset your balance.

I think, now that you have conclusive evidence about your health, your body's hyperactivity might relax a bit so that this possibly chronic ailment reveals any triggers you can control. Remember to relax and keep happy, hun.

Again, CONGRATS! It's a huge day for you.

As for reoccurring yeast as a symptom with HIV: this is, in fact, what influenced me to get tested. I was having a wild swing from yeast infections to vaginitis every month or so for about six months. Being in the military, I have universal health care to track/treat these things very quickly and extensively.

I tried suppressive therapy for it, but to no avail. Eventually, I got the test on a whim and opened a whole new chapter on life.

So, the disease does not have to be in the advanced stages for this to be a problem. As usual, it's all relative to the individual.

Your doctor is wrong to say you can't be reinfected with a yeast or bacterial infection from your boyfriend.

Of course I'm sure that this couldn't possibly be the case as you both are now using condoms until you BOTH have gone and tested for HIV together....right????

Is he sure it's a yeast infection?Has he tested for anything else?Did he do a culture or just diagnose you based on symptoms? Are you seeing a gynecologist or your primary?Maybe you should see another Dr for a second opinion.
Once again I'm full of questions and no answers for you,but I'm hoping that if you ask the right question you'll get the answer you need.I do hope things get better for you.
Take care of yourself
