Told son I am HIV+... what now??
      #190732 - 05/10/06 10:12 PM

I am 28, have been HIV+ for 9 years, since my son was 1. About 4 days ago, he came home from the neighbors unexpectedly to find me reading a book on Women and their perspectives of HIV. He flat out asked me if I had HIV... and although I cringed, I always told myself that when the day came that he asked, IF he asked, I would never lie. And I didn't. Being that he is only 10, his information is limited, and I have tried to inform him on an age appropriate level... but he seems to be stonewalling. He doesn't want details, doesn't want to know. I am concerned that this is going to consume his thoughts and without asking questions, he will be living in fear that I am surely dying.. Anyone else been through this who might have suggestions?

I am 44 yeard old and I can relate to this experience ...I have 3 children who were told about my status in two kind of settings.
When I was diagnosed in 1997 I sat at home for 5 months waiting to die...that did not happen and I was neglecting my children ..two were starting college/university and one in high school. The son in high schoool was living at home with me while the other son and daughter were now living on campus..so he felt most of the neglect and took it that I had paid more attention to the others and did not love him...He became rebellous....I became more self centered saying that I needed to keep what was left of me for myself...he did not understand what I was talking about.... so I took him to the HIV Clinic where I had started going for checkups (there was no ARV meds) and ask the doctor to talk to him because he was stressing me with his rebelious behaviour...My poor son did not have any support to deal with the information and I almost lost him to his fears of loosing his mother. He never told his siblings and his school work suffered...I know that now..for the first time he had a issue/concern/story that he could not share with his friends/peers or brother and sister. I started attending a support group and was introduced to speaking to others about HIV...I told the other children tha tI was volunteering to work with HIV positive people and started sharing the information I had on HIV with them and their friends. Then I went to a session ant there was someone that knew my family so I decided to tell my children and sisters because I wanted to be the one that shared this personal information with them.
I have learnt that the person with HIV must overcome ther fear of HIV and have correct information to share with the family before sharing their HIV status..this helps the family to handle the information/situation in a positive manner.
In my opinion if we do not have a support system including psychological support for our young children in school then we should not share this information untill we find out how to get them this kind of support and for our selves too.

Perhaps a support program for children affected by HIV/AIDS like Camp Heartland would be helpful to him. During camp, not only do the children have a great time, but they are afforded opportunities to talk about HIV/AIDS, get any questions answered and share their common experiences. Half of the kids there have HIV/AIDS, the other half live with someone who has the disease or have lost a loved one(s) to AIDS.

Best of luck to you!

Dear Anonymos
That is an extreamly difficult position, to me it seems like you did everything right, my advise is to keep a diolouge going.
I am 17 and was born with HIV, I distinctly remember when my parents told my brother and me about being positive. My brother was 8 and had already began asking questions about the seemingly endless pills and trips to the docters office. I was only 6 at the time and didn't think twice about the crushed AZT in my oatmeal. However when Mom and Dad told us, my brother got very scared, because he had heard about the virus,
(however this was back in '94, pre- cocktail, when AIDS was still mysterious and feared) But I didn't, maybe because I didn't know just what the whole thing ment, but I also felt as though my parents spoke about it in a way that made it sound managable.
Whenever I have told a friend or loved one about being HIV positive, I pay perticular attention to the way I make the virus sound. When I choose to let someone know, I am honest about the gravity of the Virus however I also let them know that I have it under controll.
I hope you find that helpful, I don't know.... Just a few thoughts from a kid.
