misunderstanding on HIVand AIDS
      #169712 - 01/12/06 07:05 PM

I was diagnosed a year ago when I was in the hospital with regular pneumonia not PCP. It was a wake up call for me. i suddenly realised at 29 not married and no kids. My t cells where at 459 and viral load at 121000. With the high number of viral load i decided to go on meds so I could get undetectable and maybe conceive. For sure three weeks into medication my tcells doubled and my viral load undetectable. Now From my knowledge, you are only labelled an AIDS patient when your Tcells are below 200 but my know it all ex who also is positive insists that he was trained on Aids issues and insists that once you go on meds you are considered an Aids patient. Can anyone clarify maybe he will get this from other people and not only me.

Technically through the center for disease control you are considered having AIDS once you have a t-cell of less then 200 and an OI(oppertunistic infection). You have not dropped below 200 and have not had an OI, you are HIV+.
Ask your ex where is he training??????

Your X doesn't know what he is talking about!! You are only considered (or diagnosed) with aids with a cd4 under 200 or an OI. You have not had either. AND....you would KNOW if you had been diagnosed with aids. Because of reporting forms (sometimes its done thru the hospitals with "codes" not names)--they would tell you your diagnosis has changed.

I'm very glad to hear you are now undetectable!! (: and your tcells are in great shape!!

Dont forget to tell your x he still has a lot of learning to do!!!!

love and prayers,
debbie

I am a HIV Positive male of 38. I am undetectable and "T" counts are about 400 - 450 right now. I had been postive almost 20 years until I got sick spring '06. My virual load was very high and my counts were below 200. I started treatment at that point, within a month's time (literally) my position changed dramatically to it's current state, Praise God!. My doctor says once your T's drop below 200 and counts are high you are considered to have AIDS, whether you become undetectable or not your AIDS status never changes and you never become HIV Postive again. I disagree with my doctor. Am I wrong? I want to marry someone in the Lord and conceive children through natural procreation. Is this possible? How do I meet a potential partner? Thanks, KB

Hi anonymous,

unfortunately your doctor is correct. Once diagnosed with AIDS, you are "medically classified" to having AIDS. This doesn't mean you would be lying to say "I am hiv positive". unfortunately we will always be HIV positive. AIDS is simply a clinical diagnosis, meaning your immune system was at one point compromised to the point of an OI or under 200 tcells.

Its just a medical issue. You wouldnt ever be lying to say i am hiv positive. even if your immune system is always higher than 200. But at one point was under 200. so technically having AIDS is mostly a medical diagnosis.
