lipodystrophy from protease inhibitors
      #1544 - 04/02/00 10:23 PM

I have known about my HIV+ status now for 6 years, and God has blessed me with continued good health. I have accessed all the major medications, plus vitamins to help fight the disease. Once I started taking the new protease inhibitors, I started growing breasts and huge amount of fat in the stomache area...infact, my entire torso started growing, while my arms and legs became extremely thin. As I continued taking the drugs, the problem contiuned. I have tried, and had some success with the Human Growth Hormone, Serastim. But it didn't help the problem with the breasts. I am considering (strongly considering) a breasts reduction, but desperatly need to talk to another + woman that has tried this. I am weighing 35 pounds more than I ever have. Aids has became this distortation of my body, and I want my body back. Anyone else with this problem?

I have had this problem and am sticking it out. I changed my diet drastically and that helped a bit. Low-fat and herbs. Take a look at the POZ article http://www.thebody.com/poz/survival/7_99/means.html
I know this doctor. Try this and see if it helps!

I have the same problem, my breasts have increased a cup size, my ass is gone my thighs and arms are thin and my veins are always pumped up in my calves and arms. I was thinking about a Serostim clinical trial, and then they called to cancel for lack of sufficient info on their end of the study. I have been taking Crixivan with Epivir and Zerit for three years now and I definitly need help in the shape department also.

I have also known of my status for 6 yrs and during this time I have gain 40 pounds, and it's mostly in the stomach area, although my breast have increased in size I don't feel uncomfortable about them. It's my stomach I dislike. I thought alot of going on a diet but my doc advice me not to but to join a gym and maybe that will help. Well we shall see after i start. I wish i had more information on what really works to help redistribute this fat or get rid of. But if you come across anything, please let me know.

I have the same problem new

Hi,

I too am suffering from lipodystrophy. My stomach is huge and I cannot take it anymore. My infectious disease doctor did not want to switch my meds because I have been doing so well(Viracept & Combivir) I had heard that protease spearing would help the fat in my belly but she didn't think that was a good idea. She sent me to a metabolic doctor who did all these tests and discoverd I had insulin resistance. I started taking Glucaphage for the insulin problem because he thought it might help but it hasn't I've been hearing alot about the growth hormone and serostim but I am not sure if my insurance will cover it. I read that you are taking it and it has helped your belly. Did your insurance company cover it? How would I find out if mine will? I heard it is very expensive almost a 1000.00 a week and I could never afford that. Please write back as soon as you can. I am so desperate and depressed that sometimes I just feel like dying

I too am having problems with the lypodystrophy. I have noticed the changes of the veins in my legs, no behind and the skinny arms and fat stomach. And I have dealt with it but now it has gone to the extreme. I have what is called the buffalo hump and it is killing me. Both mentally and physically because it is very painful. I had to stop taking my meds which were Crixivan, Zerit, and 3TC. I have been told that a plastic surgeon is thinking of starting some kind of clinic or trial or something like that and would be doing lyposuction. I am not sure if this is a good idea but I don't fit in any of my clothes anymore. My chest is huge and the hump in the back of my neck is horrible. I can sometimes disguise it with a different style of blouse but it is hot and It can get very hot and uncomfortable. I didn't want to stop my regiment before but now I wish I would have done it sooner and not look like a total freak. I am still not sure that stopping the medicines will work but I am also on a diet. I have been to the gym and the fitness instructor does not think there is a special exersice to melt the fat from in back of my neck. I need help. Can anyone tell me how the Human Growth Hormone works. And How can I get it or where do I go???? I am desperate.

I have tried Serostim it helps your stomach gives you muscle but you have to stay on it. I did'nt because i was so muscular that my veins were all popping out. I have medicaid and it did cover it.
