I never had any initial symptoms. I had HIV ten years before I found out. Women and men have the same initial flu-like symtoms around 4-5 weeks after infection. There are lots of articles at the Body about initial symptoms. It takes an average of ten years from time of infection to really show any symptoms.

Hi Shannon I became positive sometime in 1995. On my birthday 9/19/95 I came down with a severe muscle ache, sore throat, dizziness, weakness, I couldn't move out of bed. I went to the hospital, they never tested me for AIDS (what for?) I wasn't at risk.(I Thought) It was just dianoised as a very bad flu, it had to run its course. It lasted almost 2 weeks and I fought with everything I had.I also brokeout in a severe Herpes rash. I tell you it was nothing like I experienced before. Knowing what I know now, that time was called seroconverting. I still didn't get tested until My boyfriend died and I found out what he died from. I haven't been sick again since 95 other than a cold or two. So if anyone asks you the first signs this is it. You must know your body. And get tested 1-2 times a year and don't trust anybody! Linda PS If I can answer any more personal questions please ask

Hi I was reading your note on the web and I have been HIV+ since 1989. The first thing that happened to me was that I got this cough that would not go away and felt real sick for about three weeks then it went away and I felt find. Everyone has different ways of feeling because the virus is different in everyone. But most of the time the first thing that happens is you will get flu like sytoms and it might last for a couple of weeks and go away and then nothing will happen again for awhile sometimes years that is why people do not even know they have it. If I can be of any more help email me at margiricks@aol.com

Hi Shannon,
My first symptoms were tiredness, then a flu with headache, lethargy, depression and a fine all over body rash. I had a slight fever, but generally, just didn't feel good. Also, this would come back on me from time to time. Generally, I just wouldn't have any get up and go. And then I'd have a breakthru and get lots done. I wondered if I was suffering from depression. My allergies got worse and I seeemed to be firhgting sinus infections all the time. Still, I had this "flu" thing, body aches, tired, headache.
I finally found out I was Poz when I went to the state and got tested because I was in the process of starting a relationship with a man and I'd not been with anyone since "the one". It was something that came up in our E-mails and I thought it was a good idea, especially since some of the symptoms he described, I had.

I was diagnosed in August 1991 by my gynecologist. I had suffered from an infected Skene's gland for 9 months and recurrent severe yeast infections since 1990. I also showed HPV positive (thank you dear ex) Thinking back, I have determined that my symptoms actually began in December 1989 while I was pregnant with my second child (born Feb 1990, healthy and HIV-) Here is the chronilogical list of my symtoms: 12/89-Unusual Shingles like outbreak on left shoulder 2/90-3/91-Severe, undiagnosable, itchy, painful skin rash (finally determined to be allergic reaction to aspartum, i.e., Nutrasweet) 2/90-3/91-Severe fatigue, weight loss,(blamed on post-partum depression) 2/90-8/92-Reccurent vaginal yeast infections 9/90-HPV related cervicle dysplasia (per OB/GYN) 6/91-Stomatitis, Thrush
I hope this helps you out. Please if you have any reason to believe that you may be HIV+ i.e., multiple partners, blood transfusion, unfaithful partner, drug use, etc. Please get tested! Had my OB/GYN not FINALLY suggested it, I quite probably would be dead now. Do not avoid the test for fear of the results. You can survive this disease.
Best Wishes to You Texas Lady
