I can't classify my situation as a buffalo hump, but I have increased fiberous tissue on the tops of my shoulders on the sides of my neck. What is yours like? Do you have any fatloss/gain anywhere else? Are you on meds? how long?

Do you have fat GAIN in your ab area? How about hair loss?I've also been on since '96 and have switched around my meds alot. What are you currently taking?I know everyone is different, but I'll tell you my story.Started with azt/3tc no problems(on for about 8 months,vl breaktrough)switched to zerit/3tc/crix no problems right away.Around late '98 face/legs/arms really thinned out.Switched again late 99' to viracept/sustiva/videx.Now,my face is way fuller(cheeks, and legs and arms also, but abs are fuller not real severe, just not flat like before, more of a lower "pooch".)Also, I have gained 15 pounds since switch(definately was not trying too)but the hair loss is extreme.(That's why I asked if you've lost hair and what your on?)I do think zerit was responsible for the wasting, and my face reinflated by itself(too much actually)Also,I changed my diet and the way I work out and I think that has something to do with the fat repositioning itself more proportionately.(I think insulin resistance has ALOT to do with the whole lipo thing and you DON'T have to have diabetes.)But the hair loss? I'm thinking it's the viracept for me(that's why I asked about you).

Re: buffalo hump and lipodystrophy new

Hello,
I have Madelung's disease which is the non-HIV version of what you are describing. You can visit my website at http://www.geocities.com/madelungs/madelungshome.html and may email me at madelungs@yahoo.com.

I am sad that HIV drugs cause people to get what many doctors think is exactly what I have due to reasons no one totally understands. It may be a mutation of mitochondrial DNA though even this is confusing since not everyone with Madelung's shows the mutation and not everyone known to have the mutation gets Madelungs.

One caution, avoid the tissue grinding form of liposuction (in fact I'd say don't have liposuction at all!) and if you have muscle pain and constant coldness you can try the vitamin cocktail I learned of from a Russian study of Madelungs patients.

I take Calcium and vitamin D, A, C, E, Folic Acid, Selenium and charcoal. It didn't stop or cure the weird fat but it did curtail the serious muscle pain, a lot of the sick stomach days and it has stopped the neverending coldness and I have started to prespire normally again. The effect has gone on for over two months so I'm confident now it might last. The study abstract follows hope this helps someone.

Hugs

Abstract: The examination of 22 patients with Madelung's
disease revealed a sharp decline of peripheral-blood
levels of testosterone, alpha-tocopherol, retinol in
contrast to a pronounced rise in concentrations of lipid
peroxidation products. There were definite correlations
between levels of certain hormones, intensity of lipid
peroxidation and activity of antioxidant blood system.
Fourteen patients received antioxidants which relieved
pain and muscular convulsions in all the cases.

1) Get a new doctor, if you can, yours doesn't seem to be very well informed.
2) This is an old post, but hopefully my info will help someone. I was on a Crixivan, 3TC, 4DT combo for over 5 years. Over the years while on that comboI lost fat from my arms and legs and gained a "Crix Belly" and a buffalo hump. I also had some facial wasting, but my neck grewfrom a 15 & 1/2 to a size 18. My CD4s were high and no viral load but I felt so deformed. My self esteem was at an all time low. I went off of that combo had a year "holiday" during which time I had liposuction which removed about 80-90% of the hump. I am now on a new combo, but I think the hump is coming back. But my liposuction went so well, I would not hesitate to have it done again because of the difference in my self esteem. I have also started a diet and exercise program for the "Crix Belly".

I am a 41 yr old female. I was 5'3 120 lbs. Very active. A tingling on the back of my shoulders and a small hump growing prompted me to go to the Doctors. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. My primary care and my endrocronologists are at a loss of why I have this Buffalo Hump. I have been through x-ray, ultra sound, MRI and Cortisol urine tests (cushings). I am not on any meds other than my synthroid and the hump started before then anyhow. I have never taken any steriods with the exception of nose sprays (which I am told is not the same). My doctors just keep blowing this hump off because they have no clue. It is not only unsightly but also painful. Does anyone have any information or suggestions? I am desparate for an explanation.

I too just discovered that I have a hump like thing on the back on my neck/ upper spine. It was actually my sister who noticed it, and said how strange that it wasn't flat! I am not obese. I am also young--32. So I don't think it's oesterporosis or anything like that. I always notice this hump thing right after I have a baby. It goes away after wean or lose the extra weight gained during pregnancy.

Some of you may want to get your Cortisol levels checked to make sure you're not suffering from Cushing's.

Dr. Abrams is considered to be the leading expert in correcting the disfiguring side effects of Lipodystrophy in HIV-positive patients. One of the most common side effects is known as "Buffalo" Hump.

Wilshire Aesthetics was the first medical practice in Los Angeles...and perhaps the world...to treat and correct the disfiguring side effects of Lipodystrophy. During a "fear-laden" time when many physicians were afraid to even see HIV-positive patients, we were caring for them and loving them.

Dr. Abrams was the first to treat and correct "Buffalo" Humps in HIV-positive patients.

He has eliminated more "Buffalo" Humps than all other practices in Los Angeles combined.

HIV-patients from all over the world have travelled to Dr. Abrams to seek treatment for their "Buffalo" Hump.

If you are suffering from "Buffalo" Hump or fat deposits under the neck, you owe it to yourself to schedule a consultation with Dr. Abrams to learn about the safe and effective methods he has perfected to correct these disfiguring conditions.

Over 90% of HIV-positive patients treated by Dr. Abrams never regain their "Buffalo" Hump.
