I am a white male Nordic background and have never been sick.I have never been on Meds ever. Been Poz for 20+ yrs but now am having night sweats/day sweats and have developed a rash all over my body. Mt CD4 has always been around 600 and my VL around 1300. Doctor says that now they are saying people like me are getting sick even though are #'s are good and that I should start meds. Just wondering if there is anyone else out there having this same symptoms after so many years of being healthy with great #'s. Would Love to hear back from anyone. Kinda freakin me out here as I own a business and pay for my own health care. Should i get on Meds now & why?

I would be sure to seek the advice of an HIV specialist just to make sure your symptoms are HIV related. What is your home city? Depending where you are you could go to Ryan White clinic - they have top notch specialty care and you pay according to ability. Good luck.

Hi ajpooboy (pooboy?)
I was doing well for 7 years - CD4 around 900-1700 and VL <50 - 12,000 in Dec last year I started having some really weird symptoms.. long story short I started Atripla (even though CD4 was 1300 at the time) but after 4 months switched to a boosted PI (Darunavir/Ritonavir/Truvada). The meds took a few weeks to settle in but I'm feeling really well again!
CD4 and VL aren't the only indicators of health. Personally I think the HIV industry labours on this too much, people can be really well on low CD4's and high VL's and conversley, really unwell with High CD4 and low VL - we still don't know enough about the virus to now what it's doing in the 'whole' body - i.e. not just the blood and CSF.
If I were you, I'd push your doctor for the meds.. they really aren't that bad and of the all the people that I've seen take them, it's easier for those that start when they aren't feeling unwell.. seems to take longer to settle the rougher you feel when you start..
Bite the bullet big boy and get on with those meds... you'll feel like a new man in not time! x

First off I want to say that Im so happy to see people who get to live so long with this virus without progressing or having to take meds. (Long term non-progressors) If your doc is sure that your symptoms are HIV related then you should definitely start your meds before your cd4 count starts to drop to avoid IRIS (Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome) which to put it simply the more your immune system has to recover the worse it will be for you, thats why I started my med regimen once my cd4 count was 415 instead of the suggested 350 and now Im doing great. Make sure your doc does a genotype test to see if your virus has any drug resistance (which i highly doubt! Seeing as you got the virus before all the modern meds) so you know what your treatment options are and your gonna be the envy of us all for sheer life expectancy Good luck and cheers to a long long life!
