Weight Loss - not really intentional

I have a question for those experienced with meds, etc. I have been on Combivir and Sustiva since late January this year. My labs are much better, CD4 up to 550 from 227, VL to undetectable (down from 11,000). I am feeling great. I started an exercise program called toning in late May. It has helped me lose inches from my body. My question, though, is about weight loss. I have lost 35 lbs since late April, without trying at all. I eat whatever I want whenever I want, including ice cream, pie, etc. Don't get me wrong, I needed to lose weight - but I'm not even trying! I've gone from 210 lbs to 175 lbs, which makes me look and feel a lot better, but I'm starting to wonder why I'm continuing to lsoe weight without trying. Is it possibly medication related? Should I be at all concerned? I will be going back to my doctor in early August, and I'll see what he has to say also, but I was just curious if anyone had any input on this.

dj I am on the same regiman for 4 years nopw and have not experienced weight loss. Wish I have though! :-) I actually have taken all your weight! I do not think that is the problem because I thought that regiman is just the opposite but I guess anything is possible. I do have a question for you though. The sustiva kicks my ass. It makes me so tired all the time- do you have that problem? Good luck and let us know what the doc says!

I take the Sustiva at bedtime. The only side effect I noticed was the weird dreams, and I've found if I take one of my Xanax (which I'm on for anxiety) with the Sustiva, I have no problems at all. I actually have more energy than I had 4 months ago - which is great!

I also take mine at night. I do get the weird dreams and even if I have to nap during the day I get them. So realistic. :-/ Actually my fatigue may also have to do with my weight. I have no energy to get up and excercise and which makes me overweight and the weight makes me fatigued. It is lilke a never ending circle. Well let us know what the doc says. Good luck!

That's a big drop in a very short time,no wonder you're worried about it,I know it's easy to say"wish I could lose that much" but when it's happening that fast for no reason it's scary.I lost 60 pounds in 6 months when I first found out I had HIV and I always hated when people would tell me that or say how good I looked without all the extra weight.Let us know what the Dr says, and keep up the exercises because keeping your muscles toned will help you look and feel better too. Take care Terry

Hi Donna, that's a huge drop in weight. Have you considered calling your clinic to tell them now rather than waiting till whenever it is in August you see your Dr? These days I'm inclined to think that anything that out of the ordinary warrants at least a phone call, and sooner rather than later. I struggle to keep my weight on although my meds have helped enormously and I look normal weight now for the first time in about 8 years; and oh the misery when someone tells me I need to eat a bit more. I hope you get some answers and they're all good ones. Julia

Thanks everyone - I have a doctor's appt. next week. The weight loss has tapered off, and I've actually re-gained about 2 lbs in the past week. So maybe I was worried for nothing, but I'm still going to check with the doctor. Time for my labs anyway. Feeling great still....

I saw my doctor today. He was thrilled with my weight loss, and how great I look! Had labs drawn today, will take a couple weeks to get results. He said as lonog as my energy level was good, to keep up the walking & toning, and that I'm doing wonderfully. It was nice to hear it from him!
