Truvada / Viramune; My first year on HAART
      #240495 - 07/06/08 08:42 PM

I started this combo July 13, 2007 and had an immediate reaction in the form of a fever that lasted about a week. My next labs showed an undetectable VL and 689 CD4 count. Pretty good from the 16,000 copies VL and 350 ish CD4 leading into the decision to start treament 2 years after learning of my HIV status. My CD4 declined steadily over each month to the 350 range that my doctor advised as a good starting point. I thought two years untreated was pretty good.

My only regret starting treatment is the fact that I now have anemia and leukopenia, low white blood cell count. It's not terribly low but just under the low end of the scale for each. But it's been since I started the regimen.

I can look up my exact numbers if anyone on here is able to help me understand them. I see my doctor again next week, but he has been just telling me it's something to watch, nothing "worth rocking the boat over just yet".

The only side effects upon starting treatment that were of concern to my doctor were fever lasting 4 days, but apparently that was just my immune system kicking back into gear.

Personally when I saw the Dr next week I would insist that he explain exactly what the labs values mean in relation to my HIV and meds.Even if it is "nothing" he should answer any and all questions you have.Sometimes you can find pamphlets that explain what your lab results mean but usually they are talking about VL,CD4 count and percentage.
I used to have a book that explained what all lab results mean and possible causes for each one being high or low,you may be able to pick one up at a place that sells nurses uniforms and supplies.I got mine as a gift years ago when I graduated nursing school.
