FDA and non-FDA approved medications

Hello, I am hoping someone can help answer my question or direct me to a source

It is my understanding that there are provisions in the FDA regulations which do allow for the legal importation of non-FDA approved drugs for the treatment of life threatening illnesses.

does anyone know if this statement is correct and can someone cite the specific regulations -- or point me where to look further to find out?
