Recently I was diagnosed as HIV+ and currently use a provider at the Callen-Lorde clinic in NYC. Unfortunately I am not that pleased with them and am looking for new provider. A conservative provider but not one who prescribes meds too freely.
Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Try the comprehensive care clinic at St. Lukes or if you have insurance, Dr. Steven Green at NYU or Dr Guilick or Brian Boyle at Cornell. Just keep on looking. NY has a lot of HIV specialists.

New York does have many, many qualified HIV specialists. My biggest issue was getting them to return my phone calls and/or take new patients. It don't know what it's like in other cities, but here it seems to be acceptable for doctors to simply ignore you.
I have been very pleased, however, with the care I've received through the Beth Israel/Continuum Group. There are several locations available. Most of the specialists are located at Union Square in the Philips Ambulatory Care building (nice, new building).
I'm not sure what part of the city you're in or your insurance situation, so it's hard to recommend a particular location.
Good luck.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones in St. Louis. I had selected one of the leading specialists in town. It took about a day to get a call back (my primary care physician worked with me) and I've got an initial appointment within 8 days of my diagnosis. I wanted one of the best. I always knew that if I ever tested positive that this was the guy I wanted to use. I do have decent insurance which also helps. But I had never even considered the possibility that a person might not be able to get into the specialist of their choice.

Unfortunately in the largest cities in the country, it can be tough. In the case of New York, we have 8.2million residents in the city proper and nearly 50million in the metropolitan area (depending on how you define the metropolitan area).
Although we have more qualified specialists than any other place in the US, that many people can overload the system if too many people try to go after a particular doctor. Fortunately there are many choices, so if one doesn't work out, you just call the next one.

Hey there... I'm in the same situation and I wondered if you've had any luck finding a treatment center or HIV specialist you would recommend, I live in Manhattan and the options seem overwhelming but then it seems hard to get into any one doctor or center. Any advice, doctors you would recommend, one center that you think is really good, etc. would be very helpful. Thanks...

The only Steven Green who turns up at NYU is for hand/tendon specialist, do you mean Jeffrey Greene at the NYU Aids Research Center?

I am newly diagnosed, and obviously devastated. I found a fantastic infectious disease specialist who has a lot of experience in treating people with HIV. His name is Dr. Dennis Miller. He is located at 4 East 76th St. His optimism and compassion is the only thing that got me through my initial visit. He took me within a day of contacting him, and I am optimistic about my future based on his words of wisdom and encouragement. He does not take some insurance plans, but his assistant did provide claim forms for me to submit directly to my carrier. Best of luck.
