Help please.... Lipoatrophy
      #164548 - 11/17/05 11:18 PM

Noticed about a year ago that my legs were getting skinnier. Know now that it is from Lipo. Face has not sunken yet but is thinner. Fat accumulation is mostly in the armpits areas. Clinic where I go doesn't seem too worried ! I'm going back on Dec 07/05. Doc mentioned about switching to Abicivar(sp?) from Combivir.

Would Truvada be better ?
Does Lipo cause other health problems?
Other concerns with armpit fat accumulation?
Can it be reversed?
Any experienced help appreciated !!
I am scared. Loving wife and family so I don't want to appear "sick" to the world.

Me:
diagnosed April 2000
Combivir/sustiva Sept 2000
VL undetectable
CD4's 850
ratio around 52%
Only low fat foods now.
Exercise with dumbbells now.

I have learned that some medications cause the fat loss in body area. Switching could definitly help you. Its good it has not taken effect to your facial area. I have been positive for 13 yrs not, and have taken medication for about 7 or 8 of those years, but when I started in 97 there weren't many options as there are today. but the reason I have taken a break from meds was from the fat loss. (mostly arms and legs with fat build up in the abdominal area....GREAT huh!) had to do HUNDREDS of sits ups a day just to make my body seem more proportioned. and although i have been off medication for a little over 3 yrs (minus the 9 months to have my son), and the facial appearance got a bit better....I still seem to have nothing to my arms & legs. even dispite great excercise and weight lifting to them. so I would definitly try the medication switch.....it will more than likely stop the lipo that you are seeing now.

good luck, please keep us posted.

prayers,
debbie

Switch to Truvada if you can. Your lipoatrophy is from the AZT in the bombivr. Abacavir is not enough. Combivir is AZT + Epivir. Abacavir is only one drug. YOu need another 2 drugs. Truvada is Viread + FTC. What's your third drug???

The fat accumulation will reverse. the skinny legs will take longer.

Are you seeing an experienced HIV specialist?

Seeing my specialist on Dec 7. Hope to make the switch than. His nurse said probably Abacivir with Sustiva. Will be asking about Truvada, see what he says. Thanks !!

Debtex, you got me wondering if maybe I should consider a treatment holiday and see how my counts respond. I'm guessing everything has stayed stable with you ? One thing I wonder about is if I take the drug holiday that might give the virus a chance for resistance to first line therapy.

Get off the AZT,d4tZeritalso is notorious for making you melt away. The a bacavir was a good replacement but it dont stop there-= I would suggest Viread(instead of Ziagen(-less sides)epivir and viramune all lipo friendly...
yes you CAN regain some of the wieght youve lost but its slow...generally about the time it took to lose it(let me guess about 3 yrs is when you 1st noticed?
Again---Viread,Epivir,Viramune... all 1x a day if you want.
