Help with costs of meds
      #139370 - 03/29/05 11:17 PM

How does the regular person pay for the cost of HIV meds? I make a good income (but let's be realistic), have insurance but cap out on prescriptions after the first month. Cost runs between $1,000 to $1,400 a month.

Where can I go for help, as I do not qualify for assistance on the ADAP program? Any help will be appreciated.

This is a common problem and never easy. I've been faced with this a few times over the years. At one point I had to stop meds all together because I couldn't afford them.(I really regret this now) Here are some things I have done in the past:
Consulted with the doctor about my prescriptions and explored changing or deleting certain drugs to lower costs (not very likely - but still try)
Asked around (pharmacist or key person at Dr's office) for left over prescriptions or donated bottles of meds that I was on. This was probably illegal but hey I survived for about a year doing it like that.
I changed jobs once because the other company had better prescription drug benefits.
Call or write every one of the manufacturers and inquire about drug scholarships or samples from them (you'll need your scripts of course)
This is a hard one - refigure your budget and see if you can eliminate something and use the funds towards your drug budget. (one year I completely stopped eating out for lunch - and freed up about 300.00 monthly)
Please never stop taking your meds. keep applying for assistance, there may be waiver programs in your area for those who don't qualify financially but will qualify based upon their diagnosis. I hope somethig here works for you. It will be an ongoing struggle but look at me now - I can afford the drugs but I'm in a drug study right now and I'm not paying for's ironic as I think of all the thousands and thousands of dollars I've spent over the years on drugs that I am now resistant to. Keep up the fight - you'll make it.

I saw your note about the cost of meds, even when you are employed and insured, and wanted to respond. I had a similar problem, until I changed the type of insurance I had. This can usually be done during open enrollment with the company you work for.
I suggest trying to get into either an HMO or a PPO (it sounds like you have coverage from a traditional medical plan). There, the copays are constant and there are no caps, except for overall coverage (it's like a million dollars or more).
Good luck and best wishes!

I am in the same situation as you. The irony of everything is there is a group of us out here that are neither destitute, therefore qualifing for Medicaid, nor do we have exceptional insurance, such as those working for large corporations.

I applied to the Patient Assistance Programs through both drug makers. I was turned down by one, but luckily was accepted by the second one.

After doing a lot of phone calls and on line researching, I found that my insurance's online pharmacy was the least expensive. I save about $900 on the pills versus going through local pharmacies. Never assume that a large discount chain pharmacy will have the lowest prices. In reality, they tend to be the highest in my area, here in Little Rock, Arkansas.

I also developed a network of other HIVers in the area and put out the word that I was in need of pills. Luckily, several people who have either switched medications or become resistant to the ones I am taking, have passed along thier unused pills to me. You should also make your doctor aware of your financial issues. Sometimes they know of additional resources for help. Especially in the larger cities.

Another alternative I have looked into is possibly switching medications. I currently take Sustiva and Truvada. I found that the individual drugs that are combined into Truvada are actually cheaper when bought seperate. This would cause you to have to take more pills per day, but it can also save you money.

We do what we have to do to stay alive and survive.

Keep going strong and always take your pills!
