Finding a good doctor
      #71467 - 09/11/03 03:26 AM

I tested positive in June, and I am having trouble finding local resources. Any suggestions on where I can go to find a list of support groups in my area and phsycians who are HIV specialists. I am getting over the shock, as I was particular careful and still not sure how I was infected, and now I am trying to sort through the information I have found online and through my readings. Life must go on, and I just want to make the right choices... I don't want to just drop into the local Infectious Disease clinic... I would like to find a doctor that is successful in HIV treatment... Thanks to anyone who responds.

Get in touch with your local AIDS Service Organization. ASO's can help you with a number of things from finding a doctor to temporarily helping in a financial crunch.

Can't seem to find an ASO.... no local chapter here! What else? I called the state hotline, but the young lady responded by saying "this is an answering service, why don't you try the national hotline." Would the national hotline be able to recommend a local doctor? I don't really think so... any other suggestions?

Which state do you live in? Maybe some other people around here could offer some personal recommendations or something if they knew roughly where you've moved to. I don't know about calling the national hotline, but I'd be willing to bet your state's AIDS hotline (I think every state has one - there's a listing somewhere on thebody) could help. At the absolute least, they'd be able to recommend an ASO for you to contact. The large ones really do provide excellent all-around service - some even have clinics attached to them, and they can hook you up with support groups, counseling and anything else you might need help with.

If you have questions about treatment and want to learn a lot, go to the starting treatment forum here...ask Ben Young, peirone or Wohl they are great! and you ask them as often as you like

and read the stuff here about just diagnosed so you can learn more about what's a normal immune system!
