How long will I live
      #5532 - 06/13/00 02:45 PM

I just got the information that I'm +ve
I probably got the infection in Feb.
I haven't yet done any further test
What will be my life expectancy: 10/15/20 years or longer?
Will I be able to manage the infection (through treatment) without having any AIDS related infections.
I am desperate.
please help me, but please tell me the truth, not lies.
I want to plan my life, and now I cannot plan my day

Did you have any symptoms, did you experience ARS, what were your symptoms?

Nothing, I am (just) HIV +ve.
Probably I've got the infection in Feb, but I am feeling very well (I had a complete check up few months ago and everything was OK).
I also passed it to my partner and we are now very scared about our future.
My doctor told me that nowadays nobody dies any more of HIV/AIDS in Europe or US(I write from Germany), but I have the feeling that this is not completely true and that I will experience a painful life with a quality deterioration.
How long will I live?
Will I die from AIDS?
How should I plan my future (I am in the middle of my career, we were planning to buy a new house with a 10 yrs mortgage)?
I am 40 and my partner 36.

I have really no definite answers but with today's advancing technology, I'm sure you will live quite a long while. There's no way to say for sure you'll live so long since everyone's different, but I'm sure life will be still pretty much normal only with the added medication and hell, the medication these days have come a LONG way. Be glad that you have a partner with you still :D good luck to you in the future!

I'm an HIV biologist, I understand your fear. To tell the truth, it is wholly uncessary to worry much about your future. We have many weapons to fight against HIV disease, and we are finding more. In addition to drug therapy, new approaches are being studied and developed, like immune-based therapy and gene therapy, which can, at least theretically, enable you to control the virus effectively without taking the pills continuously. What you should do now is to live as long as possible and wait for the more effective therapy like stated above. Finding a HIV specialist and evaluate your current status, discuss with him/her the option of initiating treatment based on the Viral load and CD4 count and your willing and many other factors. Good luck!
