We have a friend who just told us she and her husband are both HIV+, and the husband has AIDS. We cannot find any information regarding their life expectancy. What does the current research on this matter say?

There is no information on life expectancy. It's an amazing time now! There are new medications that can really help. But it's best not to take these meds until you really need them--your friends viral load has to be checked regularly. The most important thing is that your friend see the best doctor you can--and it must be an EXPERIENCED HIV specialist--this is generally someone who specializes in infectious diseases. You can find the name of someone good from a local AIDS organization. It's also important that your friends live a healthy lifestyle--getting good nutritious foods, taking vitamins, etc. It may be that now HIV is a manageable long term disease--perhaps like diabetes....this is the hope now. Your friends really need to become experts though and NOT leave it up to their doctor! they need to read the stuff at this site and become informed. and you can be a great friend to them by forwarding them good materials--Project inform has a basic packet of materials they send out and anyone can call them for treatment info. Their number: Project Inform National HIV Treatment Line: 800-822-7422 They are in Los Angeles. Also look on this site to an excellent section: It's called First Steps to Treatment and has a collection of good basic treatment materials: http://www.thebody.com/treat/first.html
