New to HIV. A Few (personal) Questions.
      #265502 - 08/15/12 03:54 AM

After getting incredibly sick and landing in the hospital I was diagnosed with HIV last month. I simply couldn't believe the doctors when they told me I could still live a normal life and that I didn't need to worry. But the more I researched, the more I realized how much has changed since the 80s/90s. It helped me a great deal to see how far treatments have come.

Okay, I'm still reeeally scared...how am I going to pay for meds when I return to the USA someday...? Stuff like that.

First, I am NOT on medications yet for treating HIV. I may be on meds after my next appointment, but I'm not yet. I have a few questions and would appreciate anyone who could help me...
1. The only symptom I have noticed is diarrhea. Not even diarrhea - just loose stool. But it comes often...especially in the morning. Does this ever stop??? It's been several weeks and its making me crazy.

2. Since I'm NOT on meds, how much alcohol is safe to drink?? Sorry, but is it okay to get drunk sometimes?? No, I don't drink that often, but obviously I want to know what the dangers could be.

3. I've been taking prescribed anti-anxiety meds (paxil daily and xanax as needed) since before my hiv diagnosis, but I guess I'm wondering if its okay to be on those since I'm HIV positive now..?

Anyway, if you read all this, then THANK YOU. I hope I don't seem too messed up or like I'm asking all the wrong questions. All I can do at this point is write what's on my mind and deal with it one day at a time. Thank you to everyone.

Hi there...i know what you are going through but i have a friend who hasn't started medication and he is positive n has been since 2006. So do not stress. i found out about a year ago that am positive as well and i got very stressed and stared looking and researching all sorts of stuff...then i got thrush all the time but when i started accepting the reality, my mind started to settle and stress was gone...so BIG ADVICE...watch what you think if you are healthy in your mind then everything will be okay. Since i realized that i hardly get infections esp thrush. Your diet is also a big plus...Eat healthy and see results...i had lost alot of weight thinking am going to die...i can send u a picture of who i am now and u will not believe, and please note i have not started medications yet.

I drink occasionally but my friend who has been sick for long has stopped for good and he looks very healthy so i think the best thing is to stop drinking gradually.

Feel free to ask me more queries on kerryobiri@gmail.com

Question 1: will the loose stools go away? Your loose stools are more than likely caused by the medication. Paxil is usually taken at night because of its tranquilizing side effects. Your having loose stools in the morning I'm guessing right after you wake up and from the sounds of it tapers off during the day. Try eating a higher fiber meal at night before the meds. This may help calm their effect in the morning.

I'm not saying that it's not HIV causing it to some extent because HIV does affect the gut but I'm willing to bet its mostly the meds.

Question 2: drinking on occasion and in moderation shouldn't have any effect on anything. Although it doesn't mix well with the current medication you are on. I would suggest limiting drinking to the bare minimum. You don't want to damage your liver I hear they are hard to get replacements.

Question 3: those medications are fine to be on. They don't affect HIV one way or another. And coming off of them will only make things worse for you so stick with them if they are working. You will want to tell your HIV specialist that you are on them because they may not interact well with certain HIV meds. Your dr will know about this and will work around them.

I didn't think any of your questions were stupid they are all legit questions to be asking.

Thanks 'flowers' - I agree, positive thinking and low stress are extremely important. Considering I just found out about my HIV, I've been handling it pretty well so far. Thanks for the advice!

Hi 'kicker': I don't think the anxiety meds are causing the loose stool because I've been on them for quite awhile with no problems ever. When I got sick and landed in the hospital last month with encephalitis is when the loose stool issues started....which is when they also told me I have HIV. I wonder if the stomach issues mean I should start HIV meds..

About the drinking...I'll keep it to a minimum. I just want to know that I'm not going to die or anything serious from occasionaly drinking too much just because I also have HIV. Scary thought.

I got diarrhoea for like two weeks after I was diagnosed with HIV. And I didn't seem to be under any illness or anything. I think the virus might have literally just scared the shit out of me...
