It's been a long time since I was first diagnosed but if I recall my first discussion with my dr was about my numbers and whether I was ready to start taking meds. Back then there was only AZT and I was so scared of that. I saw friends die from it. So I waited . And each time my dr would gently ask if I was ready , then the " coctail" came out . And my cells were soo low that dr gently told me if I didn't like taking the meds we could always stop, but he knew once we started it would continue. Well its been 17 years now and I just love my dr. He's seen me go through Hep C treatment and grow as a person . We encourage each other spiritually .
Take notes if you want, have notes to ask questions if you want, keep a medical journal if you want. It's your life. You should never feel pressured.

list all questions you have on a piece of paper, and take them with you to ask the Dr. If the doctor seems to dodge your questions, it's a sign of a doctor who isnt very good in his field... "bedside manner" is important in finding a good specialist to treat your HIV. Doctors who arent willing to listen or "work with you" arent FOR you....

You want a Dr, that WILL do these things. also expect blood draws & labwork, and questions... (a Dr without questions for you, is another sign) Being Positive, now more than ever YOU have to be Proactive & your own personal Healthcare advocate.... good luck! keep us posted

We sound VERY similar except I was about one month ahead on diagnosis and conversion.

You sound like you have all the basics. I enrolled in counseling and it's been a nice outlet. As far as with the medical docs, expect to get some vaccinations (hep, flu, pneumonia). If you're concerned about payments you may want to ask about clinical trials. There are several, especially for patients who have never been on meds.

I feel your pain on the blood draws. It's not nearly, nearly as bad as you expect it to me! I was clammy and nervous the first time and it was a cinch. They I go to a ID specialists, who looked at my results (taken two weeks back) and said "Let's do all this again as a baseline!" and I had to get the same tests redone. I just stared at the wall and chatted with the nurse to distract. Over before I knew it.

I have two docs, a General Prac who is all but an HIV specialist (he trains specialists). He has great bedside manner, made me feel great and optimistic like I'd live forever. My ID treated my like a number and I dont feel she listened to me at all. I left feeling depressed. So... make sure you find someone you like! I plan on going to both to "double dip" for a while.

Hi!

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but encouraged that you are taking it so well.

I would encourage you to try to get your virus genotyped and sensitivity tested so that you know for sure what you are working with. The information is very helpful when you need to choose your meds, and hard to get after you start them.

Please contact me if you want to talk. Talking helps a lot.
