HIV and Primary Effusion Lymphoma (PEL)
      #259660 - 12/29/11 03:36 AM

Hello,

Back in October I discovered that my brother was diagnosed with HIV, feel free to review the post with subject "HIV Care US vs. India and Living in the Mid East". In the last two months we have been doing more tests. We've discovered that he has "Primary Effusion Lymphoma (PEL)". A rare form of cancer that is associated with HIV.

Searching this site and others, I wasn't able to find recent information about PEL. Everything seems to be from several years ago.

I am wondering who is out there that can give us hope. The reading that I have been doing is not encouraging and several questions comes to mind such as:

What type of chemo it is going to be?
The prognosis of PEL is very poor, as it is usually resistant to currently available chemotherapy drugs. Is there drugs that is known to treat it now days?
What is the live expectancy? Is it true that patients only survive an average of six months from the time of diagnosis, and only one-third of patients live a year?

Any HIV patients out there that can give us hope or share their stories?

Thanks
SMARS

Hi,

I did some poking around and found that the usual, expected outcome is pretty poor. A case study I found said that HAART administered with chemo gave the best results, but it's about 4 years old now:

Try to speak with an oncologist who is up to date on using the latest genetic testing to map your brother's cancer and use that to select a treatment plan that is best for him.

If you can get to Thailand, I know that the Horizon Cancer Center at Bumrungrad Hospital is one of the best cancer centers in Asia, and perhaps the world. I had shoulder surgery there last year and they work with insurance companies from all over the world.

Their URL: http://www.bumrungrad.com/en/horizon-cancer-treatment-chemotherapy-thailand

I hope this helps you!

Thank you for the info and suggestions. I do have an appointment with an oncologist next week and I should be able to ask the questions.

Thanks again,
SMARS
