When does this start to feel real
      #259490 - 12/15/11 10:37 PM

In reading these posts, i havent read anyone in my sitution. I cant be alone. I've been with my partner for 3 years. We don't live in the same state anymore - i was transfered 2 years ago. We've always been exculsive but because we're long distance - we can name the dates we were together.

In october 2011 - i got incredibly sick on a work trip. Originally, I thought it was the flu but it got worse. After a few days, i went to a hospital. They gave me some drugs and sent me back to the hotel. I immediately had a negative reaction to the drugs. I found my way home after a few days and saw my dr. I went for extensive tests - including the quick hiv test - all came up negative. They gave me different meds hoping this would get me stable - but i had another negative drug reaction. Over this 3 week period, i lost 22 pounds, i was in was in with my doctor every other day. He ordered the confirmation test just on a hunch. It came back positive. My infection date was 29 august 2011 and the date i sero-converted is around october 2. My original labs came back with a t4 count of 309 and a viral load of 136,000. Toda's results were 386 and 30,000 respectively. I'm in the acute phase. There is very little known about what to do in this phase. Curious if anyone else has a similar story. Its all very overwhelming right now. The only thing going for me is im in an amazing city with amazinng healthcare and my dr is an hiv specialist so we already had an established relationship.

I was in a similar situation. Was in the hospital a month ago with flu like symptoms. They tested for everything, pneumonia, mono, everything. They then sent me home and doc asked me to do an HIV test since the hospital never did it even though they said they did. It came back positive. I'm still waiting for my results from the HIV specialist of my CD4 count and viral load but he said he expects them to be low for CD4 and high for viral load because I just had Acute HIV Infection. He put me on meds right away.

We are living the same life. I got the call on 7 nov. Im curious that they choose to put you on meds right away. Even with my low t4 numbers - they are still waiting to see where i level off before deciding treatment. In the acute phase, there are lots of different opinions on when it is right to start. Because they were taking so much blood from me while they were testing for different things, they actually have a good timeline of what was going on to my system during this time. Apparently this is quite rare to be able to do and i've joined an observation study where researchers will monitor my levels over the next years.

This all feels like a dream though. My partner tested positive 3 weeks ago. Im worried that he's been this way for years and didn't know it.

I will be curious as to your counts. Thank u for responding - just reading your words made me feel less alone

OMG wow, yes we had the same HIV experience. not relationship wise but i also got the "Acute Retroviral Syndrome" reaction, i got sick about six weeks after i got infected and it was with flu like symptoms they thought i had a UTI but when i ended up going to the hospital because nothing was working they started testing me for all sorts of stuff including an HIV test it came back positive and my CD4 count was around 234 and my viral load was 9 million! yea im not exactly sure why it was sooo high but i almost had AIDS, anything below 200 is AIDS i started on medication ASAP, that was almost 4 months ago. im at 375 and 11,000 now, i havent met anyone else who started out this way but know that your not the only one. all i can say from all this is not to worry and stress too much, its not a worse case of HIV or anything like that it just affects people differently, if your not busy you should look it up and see if that followed what you went through, i wish you the best of luck in what you do, just becareful and know that your not alone.

- Robert

I'm sorry to learn of your illness and infection. I know the shock you're going through....

I wanted to make a suggestion, and that is to do yourself a favor, if you can, and get your virus genotyped and sensitivity tested. This will help make sure that you know what virus you are dealing with and what meds are available to you when you do decide to start. I and my girlfriend did this, and it really helped us and our doctor know that we were making the right medication decisions, and not just shooting in the dark. It gave us great peace of mind knowing that we were accurate with the first cocktail.

Please tell us how you do. Our thoughts are with you.

Im sure if you are new to all this, you are reading all these posts. I gave my numbers earlier just an update on my results.

My latest t4count is 460 and my viral load is 6798. Im not on meds. Im in a research study. Date of infection was aug 29, seroconverted around oct 2, got the call from the dr on nov 7.

Things do get easier. However, the one thing i've struggled with is connecting with other poz people. I live in Boston. You'd think there would be support groups all over the place - word of warning there aren't. Living with hiv is very different then years ago. I've called place that advertise newly diagonised support groups only to be told "there is no longer a need for that".

Thought i would put it out there for others to be prepared, every post i read on here always mentioned finding a support group - just a wordof warning - it might not be that easy. But don't give up - it just takes more digging then you were expecting.

I probably jinxed myself by posting that. The day after i did - my dr called me to tell me they gave me the wrong results. My numbers habe taken a dramtic turn for the worst. My cd4 count has dropped to 189 but oddly my viral load is down to 6300.

Been on a work trip - going into lab for monday for new blood work and we'll make the decision to go on meds next friday.

Needless to say, its been a tough week.

Meds will improve your numbers, just give it some time. Hang in there. All will be well. You'll see. Treat yourself to something nice this weekend. You deserve it. Take care and try not to get down.:)

The story continues.....

Went in 2 days ago to do bloodwork again - my dr just didn't feel right about how things changed so quickly. My cd4 count is 547. My dr told me to "forget last week's results they were clearly wrong". Went back to labs yesterday, getting them to rerun my lab work.

What a rollercoaster. A month ago, my numbers were 368. A week last thursday, told i went to 480. 5 days later told, there was a mistake and number is 189. Now find out its 547.

I should be thrilled with these numbers. Im not. - mentally this through me for a loop.

If there is any advise i can give anyone going through this - its what one of my co- workers told me - "this is only overwhelming if you let it be"

The rollercoaster continues. Still not on meds.
